The Project Accountant plays a critical role in the financial success of construction projects by ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timely reporting of all project-related financial information. This position works closely with Project Managers, operations teams, subcontractors, and the accounting department to monitor project costs, maintain accurate job costing, support budget forecasting, and ensure compliance with company accounting procedures. The Project Accountant helps drive informed business decisions by providing detailed financial analysis and maintaining the financial health of projects from initiation through closeout.

PROJECT

ACCOUNTANT RESPONSIBILITIES Project Cost Management
  • Reconcile and enter monthly project quantities.
  • Ensure all project costs, including labor, equipment, materials, subcontractors, supplies, and miscellaneous expenses, are accurately tracked and processed.
  • Review and process general job cost invoices and subcontractor billings accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Assist with the labor and equipment reporting system.
  • Review projects for accurate revenue recognition and provide analysis and recommendations based on findings.
  • Prepare account reconciliations, financial status reports, final invoices, and other required financial reports.
  • Assist with the preparation of monthly project projections and budget reconciliations.
  • Produce financial statements and reports using a variety of accounting and reporting systems and sources.
  • Prepare accurate and complete journal entries as needed.
  • Assist in other accounting functions to ensure a timely and accurate month-end close.
Contracts & Accounts Payable
  • Review and process project-related contracts, subcontracts, purchase orders, and other agreements.
  • Ensure timely and accurate payments to subcontractors and major suppliers.
  • Ensure cash receipts are accurately applied to the appropriate projects and billings.
Compliance & Process Improvement
  • Work closely with project management teams to ensure compliance with company accounting procedures.
  • Review and analyze job cost estimates and monthly project reports.
  • Develop and document accounting procedures for operations staff and assist with implementation and compliance.
  • Serve as a point of contact for external auditors regarding technical accounting matters.
  • Communicate regularly with Project Managers regarding project financial performance and job-related accounting matters.
  • Collaborate with accounting, operations, and project teams to support accurate financial reporting and project execution.
  • Assist with special projects and other accounting-related duties as assigned.
  • Perform additional job-related duties and responsibilities as needed.
PROJECT ACCOUNTANT REQUIREMENTS Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field required.
  • 3+ years of construction accounting experience.
  • Experience with General Ledger, Job Cost accounting, and financial reporting.
  • Experience with construction-specific ERP software required.
  • Knowledge of percentage-of-completion accounting preferred.
  • Experience with Viewpoint and HCSS software is a plus.
Technical Skills
  • Strong knowledge of construction cost accounting principles.
  • Familiarity with construction accounting and ERP software, including Viewpoint and HCSS.
  • Solid analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail with a high level of accuracy.
Physical &

Work Environment Requirements
  • Ability to multitask and manage competing priorities in a fast-paced construction environment.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing to a team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to sit, stand, and work at a computer for extended periods.
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to travel occasionally for training, recruiting events, or business needs.
