Job Description Summary
* To teach Youth Build participants ages 16 - 24 basic skills (reading, writing, and math) and GED preparation using a variety of instruction methods and resources.
* To proactively assist participants in occupational and/or post secondary research, opportunities, and placement.
* To provide supportive guidance and encourage the development of academic, life management, and personal growth skills.
Duties
1. Provide quality instruction to participants in all areas of the GED preparation curriculum. This includes basic reading, writing, math and algebra, science and social studies.
2. Ensure that those participants who are basic skills deficient (BSD) increase a minimum of one educational functional level (EFL) in math or reading or both.
3. Maintain up-to-date testing and outcome reports for both CASAS and GED testing.
4. Develop and regularly update individualized learning plans for each Youth Build participant in accordance with individual learning styles and skill levels.
5. In conjunction with other Youth Build staff, modify curriculum and other learning materials to meet individual needs and program requirements.
6. Attend case management meetings and provide observations of participant's strengths and weaknesses.
7. Demonstrate patience, flexibility and sensitivity to the educational concerns, attitudes towards learning, and needs of Youth Build members.
8. Function as part of the site team in integrating basic skills and leadership development in all components of the program.
9. Employ a variety of materials, techniques and technology to help learners improve important workplace skills such as critical thinking, problem solving and working as a member of a team.
10. Maintain a clean, organized and professional learning environment.
11. Participate in staff development opportunities to enhance teaching strategies and methods.
12. Participate in special projects as required.
13. All other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
1. Bachelor's degree in the education or a related field with ability to teach reading, writing, and math.
2. Excellent public speaking, listening, writing, and computer skills to include Microsoft Office, Internet, and email.
3. Proficiency in computer operation for computer-based instruction and a positive attitude about the use of technology
4. Passion for working with young people of diverse cultural, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds to reorient their lives, develop leadership skills, and make a difference in their community.
5. Ability to co-teach and work as part of team.
6. Ability to pass both a Motor Vehicle Record and background check.
7. NC Teacher Certification or a NCCCS-recognized credential at time of hire, or earn one within 2 years of date of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
1. Minimum of two years experience teaching basic skills and GED (General Education Development) preparation to high school students, young adults, or adults, with the ability to teach individuals with a wide variety of skill levels and learning styles.
2. Familiarity with CASAS and GED standardized assessments.
3. Master's degree in education, or closely related field
4. Experience using technology to enhance and/or deliver instruction including SMART Boards, iPads, computers, interactive PowerPoint presentations, etc.
5. Minimum of one year's teaching experience with diverse and/or at-risk populations
6. Minimum of one year's teaching experience with adults
7. Experience teaching math (from integers to algebra) to struggling students
8.
Experience with research-based reading instruction for struggling students
9.
Experience with academic and/or career counseling/advising
10.
Experience with Basic Skills / College and Career Readiness programs in the community college setting
