Position Summary

To provide, coordinate, and support pre‑professional opportunities for UNC Asheville University students to work as trained tutors focused on student success with Asheville City Schools’ (ACS) Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) school‑wide program and elective classes at three schools.

This position serves as the coordinator for UNC Asheville’s AVID responsibilities under our Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with ACS, primarily by hiring and managing UNC Asheville student tutors. The Coordinator is also responsible for tracking engagement with the schools (number of hours worked, students served, monitoring goals and outcomes) to prepare and deliver an end‑of‑year impact report.

In addition, the Coordinator supports ACS AVID activities at UNC Asheville, coordinating day‑of schedule and logistics for events such as ACS campus field trips and Summer Bridge program.

The Coordinator must be a collaborative self‑starter who can bridge organizational (internal and external) boundaries. This position will champion UNC Asheville’s commitment to community engagement by facilitating a work environment that emphasizes career‑readiness and encourages knowledge of, respect for, and the ability to engage with individuals of various backgrounds.

Responsibilities
  • Co‑coordinate UNC Asheville’s AVID responsibilities under the MOU with ACS.
  • Recruit, co‑train (with ACS personnel), schedule, observe, coach, supervise, and evaluate approximately 20–30 University student tutors each semester and manage 2 Tutor Leaders.
  • Track engagement with the schools (hours worked, students served, goals, outcomes) and prepare an end‑of‑year impact report.
  • Support ACS AVID activities at UNC Asheville, coordinate day‑of schedule and logistics for events such as campus field trips and Summer Bridge program.
  • Co‑coordinate tutor training, conduct observations, and provide coaching.
  • Manage program budgets, including the AVID Summer Bridge budget.
  • Organize campus visits for AVID students and participate in AVID site teams and university committees.
  • Ensure tutoring and assessment practices adhere to the highest standards for educational effectiveness and fairness.
Qualifications
  • Minimum Education / Experience /

    Skills:

    Baccalaureate credentials (Bachelor’s degree required).
  • Preferred Education / Experience /

    Skills:

    NC Teaching license and K–12 classroom experience desirable. Bachelor’s degree required. Experience and knowledge of best practices in training and assessment. Experience managing budgets and supervising paid staff/students. Understanding of UNC Asheville’s Liberal Arts and Sciences‑based Teacher Licensure program. Experience working with various school populations.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    Understanding of current Education policies and initiatives. Program administration and implementation experience, especially with college‑student and public‑school student relationships. Experience working with diverse and multicultural students and families. Training and experience in AVID or similar school reform initiatives. Strong written and verbal communication. Experience with Microsoft Office and Canvas or equivalent. Ability to plan and monitor expenditures to meet organizational objectives and compliance.

    Ability to prepare budget documents and reports. Ability to understand issues, identify problems and opportunities, and determine appropriate course of action, including assisting others in peer positions and addressing student concerns.

    Hours:

    Temporary Position – Anticipated 6‑month assignment (January – June 2026). Typical hours Monday‑Friday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Occasional evening and weekend work during special events may be needed. Travel to participating Asheville City Schools required.
