The County Extension Director is an employee of North Carolina State University. The primary responsibility of this position is to provide leadership for and coordinate the efforts of the county Extension staff in developing an effective total county Extension educational program.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit – Person County Cooperative ExtensionNorth Carolina Cooperative Extension gives our residents easy access to the resources and expertise of NC State University and NC A&T State University. Through educational programs, publications, and events, Cooperative Extension field faculty deliver unbiased, research-based information to North Carolina citizens. Our mission is to partner with communities and local governments to deliver education and technology that enrich the lives, land, and economy of North Carolina.
Person County offers a rural lifestyle with easy access to cultural arts, higher education, major sporting events, and world-class health care. The 39,000 residents enjoy Hyco and Mayo Lakes and are within easy driving distance of Kerr Lake and Falls Lake. Raleigh, Durham, and Greensboro are within an hour’s drive, as is the Research Triangle Park. Person County is home to one of the seven Megasites in North Carolina.
Higher education is offered at Piedmont Community College, and several colleges and universities are within 100 miles of Roxboro, the county seat. Some of those institutions include NC State University, NC A&T State University, UNC‑Chapel Hill, Duke University, UNC Greensboro, and Wake Forest University.
Agriculture contributes over $36 million in direct sales to the Person County economy. The county’s 395 farms and over 95,000 acres in farm production grow tobacco, soybeans, corn, vegetables, forages, cattle, sheep, goats, and hogs. Fifty-four percent of the county is forested, with logging operations valued at $6.4 million plus processing of wood products valued at over $100 million. Access to population centers and direct marketing opportunities has encouraged the increase in small farm operations.

Duties and Responsibilities- Serve as the county Extension administrative leader and administer county Extension.
- Provide visionary leadership for a comprehensive Extension program to meet the needs of county citizens.
- Maintain an effective advisory leadership system representative of the program of work.
- Manage and coordinate resource development for all program areas, including fiscal responsibility for the county and state‑appropriated funds.
