The Family and Consumer Science (FACS) Foods and Nutrition Teacher develops lesson plans and instructs students on family and consumer science content. They are responsible for providing a progression of learning that includes content standards and career opportunities. The FACS teacher will be responsible for delivering group and/or individual student instruction, creating opportunities for field experiences, inviting guest speakers, forming business industry partnerships, and collaborating with other teachers, professional staff, and administrators to address instructional and/or classroom issues.
Additionally, the classroom teacher is expected to respond to a wide range of inquiries from students’ parents or guardians regarding the instructional program and student progress. The FACS teacher may also be expected to sponsor a CTSO (Family, Career, Community Leaders of America (FCCLA)). FCCLA provides students with the opportunity to develop leadership skills, occupational proficiency, and self-awareness.
MinimumRequired Qualifications
- Must hold or be eligible for a North Carolina teaching license with an endorsement in Family and Consumer Science (FACS) 710 or 716.
- Completed a state‑approved teacher preparation program in Family and Consumer Science.
- Completed a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution along with passing the Praxis exam in Family and Consumer Science 5122.
- Prior teaching experience (preferred).
- Develop and deliver engaging and standards‑based FACS instruction aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and Career Clusters Framework.
- Provide instruction in one or more FACS pathways, such as Foods and Nutrition (primary teaching responsibilities), Child Development (as needed), Interior Design (as needed).
- Integrate real‑world applications, project‑based learning, and 21st‑century skills into the curriculum.
- Prepare students for Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) participation (e.g., FCCLA) and encourage leadership and competition opportunities.
- Manage and maintain a safe, inclusive, and organized classroom and lab environment that supports hands‑on learning.
- Use a variety of instructional strategies, assessment tools, and technologies to meet diverse learning needs and monitor student progress.
- Collaborate with colleagues, families, community partners, and CTE advisory boards to enhance student learning and career readiness.
- Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date records of student achievement, attendance, and other required documentation.
- Participate in ongoing professional development, CTE department meetings, and school improvement initiatives.
- Follow all federal, state, and district policies, including those related to CTE reporting and compliance.
- Supervise students in both classroom and laboratory settings, ensuring safety and proper use of equipment and supplies.
- Account for and maintain inventory for classroom, school, and district property as required.
- Advise the CTE Director and school administration of needed repairs, replacements, or unsafe conditions as soon as they occur.
- Communicate with parents through conferences and other means to discuss student educational needs and progress.
- Compile information from various CTE pathways sources and disseminate information via meetings, conferences, professional development, presentations, etc. to recruit employers, stakeholders, mentors, teachers, etc.
- Participate in required meetings with local business partners.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned by the CTE Director and carry out non‑instructional duties as assigned or as needed.
- Follow a plan for professional development and demonstrate evidence of growth.
Physical Requirements
Physical Requirements:
Must be physically able to sit, stand, walk and drive a car. Must be able to lift boxes up to 10 pounds. Physical demand requirements are for Light Work.
The role requires strong competencies in data conception, interpersonal communication, language ability, intelligence, verbal and numerical aptitude, spatial aptitude, motor coordination, manual dexterity, color discrimination, and interpersonal temperament.
