ART & ARTH Studio Technician #003918
Department & LocationThe Department of Art & Art History at UNC Asheville, North Carolina, located in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Position SummaryThe Department of Art & Art History is hiring an Art and Art History Studio Technician to work with students and faculty, utilizing studio spaces and equipment. The Technician will maintain a safe, organized studio environment, supervise students, manage inventories and budgets, and develop and administer safety and equipment training programs.
Responsibilities- Maintain a safe and organized art studio environment.
- Ensure proper use of equipment and materials.
- Supervise students in studio spaces.
- Manage inventories and budgets with approval of faculty.
- Develop and administer safety and equipment training programs.
- Provide guidance and mentoring to students in creation, development, and exhibition of art.
- Occasionally undertake teaching or co‑teaching responsibilities.
- Master of Fine Arts degree (or equivalent experience).
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. to waist height.
- Valid driver's license.
- Prior knowledge of studio equipment and safety procedures.
- Ability to work autonomously and with students.
- MFA degree in art with experience in high‑paced academic studios.
- Experience in ceramics and sculpture.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Skills and Abilities
- Experience managing high‑energy academic studios.
- Extensive experience operating and firing all types of kilns (wood, electric, gas).
- Knowledge of traditional Anagama firing aspects.
- Experience maintaining kiln bricks and repairing kilns.
- Familiarity with woodworking equipment (table saw, band saw, jointer, etc.).
- Familiarity with metal fabrication equipment (shear, brake, hydraulic press, etc.).
- Experience with MIG, TIG, and Oxy‑Acetylene equipment.
- Experience with forge, foundry, mold‑making, slip‑casting, lost‑wax and other casting processes.
- Familiarity with non‑traditional sculptural materials.
- Managing inventories of consumables and supplies in studio and gallery environments.
- Experience hanging and installing artwork in galleries.
- Enforcement of safety regulations.
- Familiarity with CNC technology and 3D printers.
Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. This is an 11‑month position (August–June). Evening and weekend work may occasionally be required.
