The North Carolina Department of Administration seeks a Structural Engineer for its State Construction Division. The State Construction Office (SCO) administers planning, design, and construction of all state facilities, including universities and community colleges. The Division provides architectural and engineering services for the capital improvement program for all state institutions and agencies.
Responsibilities- Review and approve design and construction documents related to structural and civil engineering aspects of capital improvement projects.
- Verify scope and estimated costs of projects with contract requirements and available funds.
- Ensure efficient and proper use of space, form, and materials of buildings and building sites.
- Check the level of completion, accuracy, clarity, and appropriateness of plans and specifications.
- Indicate corrections and suggest improvements and revisions.
- Promote economy in initial and long‑term maintenance costs.
- Advise on energy‑efficient systems and conservation measures.
- Select, specify, and use appropriate materials.
- Ensure compliance with NC Building Codes and applicable NC General Statutes on public work.
- Confirm conformance of the contractual bid package with State Construction Office guidelines, policies, and procedures.
- Coordinate plans and documents among other engineering disciplines.
- Review all structural engineering aspects of capital improvement projects submitted by designers in the construction document phase.
- Assist construction monitors in the field in resolving technical or contractual issues and in final inspection.
- Monitor structures under construction and provide 3‑D insight into problems that can be corrected earlier in the 2‑D review process.
- Registration as a North Carolina Professional Engineer (must provide proof of registration).
- Bachelor’s degree in Structural or Civil Engineering from an accredited institution and four (4) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Working knowledge of principles and practices of Structural and Civil Engineering.
Sign‑on bonus: $5,000 (subject to budget and eligibility).
Maximum salary: $99,782 – Recruitment range: $70,478–$99,782.
Paid holidays: 12 annual paid holidays.
