Mechanical Systems Engineer – High-Speed Automation & Manufacturing

Location:

Onsite Asheville, NC

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated Mechanical Systems Engineer to support the design, development, and optimization of high-speed automated manufacturing systems. This role will focus on improving equipment performance, supporting advanced automation technologies, and driving continuous improvement in a fast-paced production environment.

Key Responsibilities

High-Speed Automation & Equipment Support

  • Design, develop, and support high-speed automated assembly systems with throughput rates up to 360 parts per minute
  • Troubleshoot and optimize automation equipment to ensure maximum uptime, efficiency, and quality
  • Support equipment upgrades, retrofits, and new capital installations
  • Collaborate with controls engineers, integrators, and maintenance teams on system improvements

Material Handling & Automation Systems

  • Support automated material handling systems including robotics, AMRs (Autonomous Mobile Robots), AGVs (Automated Guided Vehicles), and conveyor systems
  • Improve systems for movement, storage, and retrieval of totes, pallets, and components
  • Identify opportunities to enhance system flow, reduce bottlenecks, and improve throughput

Vision Systems & Quality

  • Support and optimize high-speed vision inspection systems used for part quality verification
  • Work with quality and controls teams to maintain and improve inspection accuracy and reliability
  • Assist in root cause analysis for defects identified through automated inspection systems

Manufacturing Support & Continuous Improvement

  • Provide hands-on engineering support to production operations
  • Lead and participate in continuous improvement initiatives using:
    • Lean Manufacturing principles
    • Six Sigma methodologies
    • PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act)
    • RCA (Root Cause Analysis)
  • Analyze process data to identify trends and drive improvements in safety, quality, and productivity

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, and Maintenance teams
  • Support supplier interactions, equipment vendors, and system integrators
  • Participate in design reviews, project planning, and technical problem-solving

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • 5 years minimum experience with automated manufacturing systems and equipment
  • Knowledge of mechanical design, materials, and industrial systems
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical and automation-related issues
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting high-speed automation environments (300+ parts per minute preferred)
  • Medical device manufacturing experience strongly preferred
  • Experience with:
    • Robotics and automated material handling systems (AMR, AGV, conveyors)
    • High-speed vision inspection systems
    • Proficiency in Lean and Six Sigma tools and methodologies
    • Familiarity with PLC-controlled systems and automated equipment integration
    • Knowledge of GD&T and design for manufacturability (DFM)
