A well-established, mid-sized North Carolina law firm is seeking an experienced Tax Planning Attorney to join its Asheville office. The firm has a strong presence across multiple practice areas and is looking to expand its sophisticated estate and wealth transfer planning department. This role is ideal for an attorney with a significant background in estate tax planning who is comfortable advising high-net-worth individuals, business owners, and families on complex tax strategies.

The Tax Planning Attorney will focus primarily on advanced estate and gift tax planning, working closely with clients and their financial advisors to design and implement strategies that preserve wealth and minimize tax exposure. The attorney will collaborate with other practice groups within the firm, including estate planning, business law, and real estate, as needed.

Key Responsibilities
  • Advise clients on complex estate, gift, and generation-skipping transfer tax planning strategies
  • Design and implement advanced wealth transfer techniques (e.g., irrevocable trusts, GRATs, SLATs, family limited partnerships, charitable planning vehicles)
  • Structure tax-efficient succession plans for closely held businesses
  • Analyze federal and state tax implications of estate plans and transactions
  • Collaborate with CPAs, financial advisors, and other professionals to coordinate comprehensive tax strategies
  • Stay current on federal and North Carolina tax law developments
Qualifications
  • J.D. from an accredited law school
  • Licensed and in good standing in North Carolina (or eligible for admission)
  • Significant experience in estate tax and wealth transfer planning
  • Demonstrated expertise in federal estate, gift, and generation-skipping transfer tax law
  • LL.M. in Taxation preferred but not required
  • Strong analytical, drafting, and client counseling skills
  • Ability to manage sophisticated matters independently
