Description:

This unit has a total of 40 beds. The patient ratios are 1:5 for Step-Down and 1:6 for Med Surg, with 1:5 if combined day and night. The goal is a free charge structure, with typically 1-2 CNAs based on volume day and night. We utilize Baxter IV pumps for our care delivery. The documentation system is Cerner. Scheduling requires every other weekend with no call and assistance during holidays.

Floating to other units within skill set is expected. Patient safety and care come first. This unit is focused on ED decompression and enhanced throughput. We do not serve as an overflow or holding unit. We are a Clinical Decision/Direct Admit Unit with a primary goal of receiving admitted patients from the ED. Our responsibilities include completing the Admission Assessment, Medication Reconciliation, and initiating acute care orders.

This refined process reduces overall length of stay and enhances the patient/family experience. Our patients have a wide variety of diagnoses, making a well-rounded background advantageous. Although minimal bedside procedures are performed due to the environment, the unit strives for excellence in patient care. The staff tenure is supportive and collaborative, fostering a positive work environment. There are additional opportunities available in Telemetry and as Transport Nurses.

Telemetry nurses ensure safety for patients while Escalating issues at the clinical level. Transport Nurses assist in moving higher acuity patients, allowing ED nurses to focus on ongoing patient care.
