Job Description
Full Time: a position working 35+ hours per week. The starting pay range for this position begins at $17.09/hour and is based on the level of qualifications and relevant experience above the minimum requirements.
Schedule may vary, but is generally 7am-3:30pm Monday - Friday with occasional weekends.
This is a mid-level staff position with responsibilities for plant installation, care, and maintenance in Estate gardens and landscapes. The Gardener II will work as part of a crew assigned to a specific section/area; crews are charged with design, presentation, and execution of gardening plan within established parameters. In addition, staff will assist with special projects and events as required.
Note:
Ideal candidate will have previous experience working with Woody plant material in Ornamental Landscapes.
- High school diploma. A two-year college degree and/or 2 years related on the job training. Industry acknowledged certifications and designations are preferred. B.S in Horticultural field preferred.
- At least two (2) years of related horticultural experience. The ideal candidate will have had prior experience working in a public garden responsible for plant care/maintenance. A combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Strong knowledge of annuals, perennials, herbaceous plants, and/or roses. Candidates should be able to identify plants and proactively troubleshoot on care.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team as well as independently with little supervision.
- Demonstrated commitment to providing world class guest service (internal and external).
- Ability to exercise good judgment and be proactive; must be comfortable with and able to take initiative as appropriate.
- Ability to become WPS certified within 10 days of hire.
- Acquire a pesticide license within 1 year of hire.
- Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and be at least 18 years of age.
- Ability to stand/walk for extended periods of time; must be able to kneel, stoop, bend, reach below and overhead.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs on a regular basis.
- Must be able to climb ladders, stairs, and scaffolding as needed.
- Ability to safely operate small equipment and machinery (e.g. edgers, mowers, etc.).
- Must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather with fluctuations in temperature and conditions.
- Ability to work safely with and around pesticides and other chemicals.
Job Duties
- Performs gardening duties including but not limited to installing and maintaining plants in greenhouses, gardens, interiors, and landscape settings with minimal supervision.
- Prepares soils and compost as needed for planting with minimal supervision.
- Performs basic grounds maintenance duties including but not limited to general cleanup, trash removal, weeding, mowing, hauling and handling brush.
- Complies with all safety procedures related to duties.
- Assists guests in a positive, courteous manner.
- Works in an efficient, productive manner.
- Follows instructions, written or verbal.
- Applies pesticides or fertilizers with minimal supervision.
- Works efficiently with minimal supervision.
- Follows daily routine without supervision.
- Operates basic and specialized grounds equipment.
