Job Description:
The starting pay range for this position begins at $17.09/hour - $18.25 and is based on the level of qualifications and relevant experience above the minimum requirements. Full Time: a position working 32+ hours per week. This is a mid-level staff position with responsibilities for plant installation, care, and maintenance in Estate gardens and landscapes. The Gardener II will work as part of a crew assigned to a specific section/area;
crews are charged with design, presentation, and execution of gardening plan within established parameters. In addition, staff will assist with special projects and events as required. The Preferred candidate will have landscape experience working with woody plants. Schedule can vary, but is generally 7:00am - 3:30pm Monday - Friday with occasional weekends.
Essential Job Duties include but are not limited to:
- Performs gardening duties including installation and maintenance of plants in greenhouses, gardens, interiors, and landscape settings with minimal supervision.
- Prepares soils and compost as needed for planting with minimal supervision.
- Performs basic grounds maintenance duties including general cleanup, trash removal, weeding, mowing, hauling and handling brush.
- Assists guests in a positive, courteous manner and provides world class guest service (internal and external).
- Operates basic and specialized grounds equipment and follows safety procedures related to duties.
- Follows daily routine without supervision and works efficiently with minimal supervision.
- Applies pesticides or fertilizers with minimal supervision and becomes proficient with required certifications.
- Works as part of a team or independently as needed and demonstrates good judgment and initiative.
- Supports design, presentation, and execution of gardening plans within established parameters; assists with special projects and events as required.
- High school diploma. A two-year college degree and/or 2 years related on-the-job training. Industry acknowledged certifications and designations are preferred. B.S. in Horticulture or related field preferred.
- At least two (2) years of related horticultural experience. Prior experience in a public garden responsible for plant care/maintenance is preferred; a combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Strong knowledge of annuals, perennials, herbaceous plants, and/or roses. Ability to identify plants and proactively troubleshoot care needs.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team as well as independently with little supervision.
- Demonstrated commitment to providing world class guest service (internal and external).
- Ability to exercise good judgment and be proactive; must be comfortable with and able to take initiative as appropriate.
- Ability to become WPS certified within 10 days of hire.
- Acquire a pesticide license within 1 year of hire.
- Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and be at least 18 years of age.
- Ability to stand/walk for extended periods of time; allowed to kneel, stoop, bend, reach below and overhead.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs on a regular basis.
- Must be able to climb ladders, stairs, and scaffolding as needed.
- Ability to safely operate small equipment and machinery (e.g. edgers, mowers, etc.).
- Must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather with fluctuations in temperature and conditions.
- Ability to work safely with and around pesticides and other chemicals.
