Position OverviewCASE is seeking a Fisheries Scientist/Quantitative Ecologist to support NOAA Fisheries’ Northwest Fisheries Science Center (NWFSC) Fish Ecology Division. This position supports multidisciplinary research advancing Pacific salmon recovery, ecosystem-based fisheries management, ESA implementation, and conservation of aquatic resources throughout the Pacific Northwest. The successful candidate will collaborate with Federal scientists to transform complex biological, environmental, and fisheries datasets into transparent, reproducible, management-ready scientific products.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct quantitative ecological and fisheries analyses using R and/or Python.
- Develop reproducible analytical workflows supporting fisheries research.
- Analyze biological, environmental, and spatial datasets.
- Develop technical reports, scientific visualizations, and management decision-support products.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary research teams.
- Support peer‑reviewed publications and technical memoranda.
- Document analytical methods and maintain reproducible code repositories using Git Hub.
- Utilize NOAA scientific information management systems, including COMPASS, where applicable.
- M.S. or Ph.D. in Fisheries, Ecology, Marine Science, Quantitative Ecology, Biology, Statistics, Oceanography, or related discipline.
- 3+ years of experience with fisheries ecology or ecosystem science, preferably Pacific salmon or anadromous fish research.
- Experience with statistical modeling and ecological data analysis.
- Experience developing reproducible scientific workflows.
- Excellent technical writing and communication skills.
- Publication record.
- Proficiency in:
- R and/or Python.
- Bayesian statistics or hierarchical modeling.
- ArcGIS Pro or QGIS.
- Git Hub and version control.
- COMPASS familiarity.
