Job Summary

As a central part of the university community, the mission of University Police is to contribute to and promote the greater mission of UNC Asheville by facilitating a safe, secure, and service‑oriented environment for all students, faculty, staff, alumni, and visitors.

University Police officers conduct a wide range of law enforcement activities, including patrolling, conducting investigations, crime prevention, assisting motorists, parking and traffic control, and providing security at special events. Officers also participate in training exercises, mandatory mandatory mandatory mandatory classes, and perform other assigned duties.

• Patrol campus premises within designated jurisdiction
• Conduct criminal investigations and gather evidence
• Provide crime prevention programs and public education
• Assist motorists and control parking/traffic on campus
• Secure special events and maintain crowd control
• Administer mandatory first‑aid and emergency response training
• Perform other duties as assigned by department leadership

• Free tuition for officers seeking to continue their education at any University in the UNC System
• 10% night shift differential pay
• Fixed (non‑rotating) shifts (day, night, and split) based on departmental needs
• Every other weekend off if assigned to patrol

• High school diploma or GED and completion of the State of NC Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET)
• Completion of the appointing agency's designated field training program for newly appointed Campus Police Officers
• For Police Officer I: 0‑2 years of experience and probationary certification from NC CJETSC
• For Police Officer II: 2 years of experience as a sworn officer and current NC CJETSC certification
• For Police Officer III: 4 years of experience as a sworn officer and current NC CJETSC certification
• For Master Police Officer I: 6 years of experience as a sworn officer (advanced degree reduces minimum experience by 1 year) and current NC CJETSC certification
• Candidates not meeting minimum criteria may be considered for a Police Officer Trainee position

• Current possession of North Carolina BLET certification
• At least two years of campus law enforcement experience
• Strong preference for mandatory mandatory self continuous certification within one year
• Out‑of‑state candidates must have completed mandated mandatory self BLET accredited by their transfer state, maintain continuous service, and meet NC certification requirements

• Ability to prepare accurate written reports of activities and incidents
• Ability to act and direct others quickly in emergency situations
• Maintain a working knowledge of modern policing principles
• Knowledge of federal laws and NC general statutes
• Knowledge of local ordinances and university policies
