Summary

National Power is accepting applications to fill a Generator Service Technician opening in our Asheville, NC market. Under the general direction of and reporting to the Service Manager, the Generator Service Technician is responsible for maintenance and repair of generator sets and other electrical equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Core duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Perform various types and levels of maintenance and repair on generators and parallel systems ranging from 5-5000 kw. Troubleshooting and repair of Automatic Transfer Switches, including bypass isolation, and closed transition types. Repairs will include performing preventative maintenance service (oil and filters), troubleshooting AC and DC circuits, removing and replacing any and all components as necessary, performing warranty work per manufacturer’s guidelines, and performing start-up/commissioning on new generators and generator systems.
  • Perform diesel or gaseous engine troubleshooting and repair, including ignition components, injection systems, valve adjustments, etc.
  • Perform load bank testing on generator(s) to ensure units are in proper operating conditions and meet applicable code requirements.
  • Assist other technicians with large multi-person jobs, or troubleshooting complicated issues.
  • Education and Experience
    • HS Diploma required;
      Associate degree in an electrical/mechanical related field preferred.
    • Current Generac Power Systems certification preferred.
    • US Air Force Electrical Power Production Specialist, US Navy Electrician’s Mate, or Generator and/or UPS field service technician preferred.
    Skills and Other Qualifications
    • Excellent communication skills and ability to give verbal/written reports of job status, repair recommendations, equipment/supplies needed.
    • Ability to account for time spent on jobs and travel.
    • Valid driver’s license with excellent driving record. Will require driving long distances to job sites and possibly overnight stays 1-3 nights per week. Company covers hotel costs and provides a meal allowance per company guidelines.
    • Good computer skills and comfort with Microsoft software (Internet Explorer, Word, Excel, and PDFs).
    • Ability to work from home premise, manage vehicle maintenance, maintain required parts inventory, and safeguard company property (cell phone, laptop, specialty tools, etc.).
    • Ability to manage difficult or emotional customer situations; responds promptly to customer needs and feedback; meets commitments.
    • Good problem-solving skills during emergency situations or when resources are limited.
    • Training will be provided. Employee may be required to attend training courses in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and other locations as needed.
    • Demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness; seeks quality improvements; applies feedback and monitors own work for quality and safety.
    Work Conditions
    • May work in various weather conditions (heat, rain, snow, high humidity, etc.).
    • Frequently work near moving mechanical parts.
    Physical Demands
    • Lifting and carrying heavy objects, up to 75 lbs, may be required.
    • Climbing ladders, scaffolding, stairs, ramps; ascending/descending as needed.
    • Handling, grasping, turning, and using hand(s).
    • Entering text or data into a computer or other device using a keyboard.
    • Push/pull tasks may involve use of hands/arms and/or legs.
    • Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet to access restricted spaces.
    • Operating controls on machinery or equipment with feet or legs as needed.
    • Clarity of vision required for small objects or reading small print, including use of computers.
    • Sitting for extended periods may be required.
    • Occasional crawling to enter confined spaces.
    Compensation & Benefits
    • Competitive pay depending on experience and certifications. Overtime eligible at 1.5x base. Pay reflects productivity and performance.
