Job Summary
Packaging Machine Operator responsible for the safe, efficient, and continuous operation of snack packaging machinery in the Packaging Department at Ashland.
Responsibilities- Read production schedule and plan accordingly.
- Maintain the operation of packaging machinery by monitoring codes, dates, and prices.
- Ensure an adequate supply of roll stock and that all packaging materials are available for each machine.
- Adjust machine micro‑logic set‑up as needed to maintain an efficient and low‑waste operation.
- Set up and change over machinery, properly run, adjust procedures, perform sanitation cleanup, and shutdown.
- Plan ahead for machine changeovers and efficiently change from one product to another.
- Monitor and adjust each machine to ensure proper film cut‑off and that bags have correct end and back seals.
- Ensure machines run at standard speeds.
- Monitor and check weights and product appearance as required.
- Properly account for product run‑off, sort through and rework all good product.
- Keep machines and work areas clean, wipe machines, and blow down the area when required.
- Immediately report any maintenance problems to the Maintenance Mechanic or Supervisor.
- Practice and adhere to safety and hygiene guidelines for personal protection and housekeeping.
- Store supplies in designated areas and keep aisles/exits clear and free from obstruction.
- Follow safe lifting and carrying instructions for various sizes, shapes, and weights; identify and report equipment issues.
- Report all job‑related injuries to supervision.
- Provide leadership and direction to the entire packaging line.
- May qualify to perform as a Back‑up Packaging Coordinator or other technical/skilled position.
- May monitor and replenish seasoning on overhead to ensure proper coverage.
- Mandatory overtime may be required.
- Perform other duties as required.
High School Diploma or GED and/or one year of production experience in a manufacturing environment.
Physical RequirementsMust be able to comply with the physical demands of constantly lifting and moving stock by hand or with manual equipment (including pallet jacks and forklifts). Ability to lift 40+ lbs. on a regular basis, and occasionally lift/move more than 50+ lbs. with mechanical or peer assistance. Continuous standing, frequent walking, continuous use of hands, occasional climbing, frequent kneeling, continuous speaking, hearing, tasting, smelling where applicable, and repeated twisting.
Must also be able to bend, squat, push, pull, and lift up to 100 lbs. occasionally.
The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, wet and/or humid conditions, occasional exposure to high precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level is usually loud.
