Position Description

Southern Oregon University (SOU) is seeking an experienced, analytical, and results‑oriented accountant to serve as Foundation Accounting Manager. The role manages and oversees the foundation’s financial operations in collaboration with a contracted fractional CFO. Core responsibilities include financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and accounting operations—accounts payable, accounts receivable, month‑end posting, reconciliations, audit preparation, and day‑to‑day accounting functions.

The Manager balances multiple priorities, serves staff and donors, demonstrates strong analytical skills, and supports the growth of the university’s giving programs through trend analysis, system improvements, and regulatory compliance. The Manager works autonomously yet collaboratively with stakeholders.

Minimum Requirements
  • BA/BS/BBA in Accounting or related field plus minimum 2 years of related experience
  • Demonstrated experience with general ledger management and reconciliations
  • Comprehensive understanding of accounting functions: accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash receipts, journal entries, reporting, reconciliations, posting procedures, and general ledger management
  • Ability to understand fund‑management databases and fund accounting concepts
  • Excellent computer skills; proficient with Microsoft Office, spreadsheets, and database applications
  • Customer‑centered service skills
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
Preferred Requirements
  • Experience with non‑profit or fund accounting
  • Experience with The Financial Edge and Fundriver software
Essential Functions
  • ((70%) Duties)

    • Apply complex accounting principles to specialized records and reports; assemble and analyze data, prepare statements and reports related to foundation transactions.
    • Create and review procedures for compliance, internal controls, reconciliations, and accounting practices. Support the foundation audit and financial statements.
    • Execute policies and procedures on all aspects of financial data management, ensuring audit trail and compliance.
    • Prepare regular bank deposits and electronic deposits of checks.
    • Complete reconciliations in accounts payable, receivable, cash receipts, fund balances, banking, and investments; identify and resolve discrepancies.
    • Perform monthly posting procedures including reconciliation and entry, fee assessment, distribution of investment earnings, and gift data posting.
    • Compile financial statements, budget recaps, and special reports; prepare reports for foundation committees and board meetings.

    • Develop complex queries, exports, and reports to support development staff, foundation affiliates, and university stakeholders.
    • Present data in accessible formats appropriate to users’ knowledge levels.
    • Collaborate with end users to gather requirements and ensure testing and validation.
    • Provide support and training to end users on running standardized and ad hoc reports.
