Position Description

Jefferson Public Radio (JPR) is Southern Oregon University’s network of public radio stations. This position oversees JPR’s weekend operations and serves as a local host of NPR’s Weekend Edition, inserting local breaks into designated portions of the program. The employee must be comfortable working in a live radio environment, have a clear and engaging speaking voice, and be an effective problem solver using a wide array of computer systems and technology.

Minimum Requirements
  • Clear and engaging speaking voice, able to read aloud from printed copy smoothly and with pacing awareness.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work under strict deadlines.
  • Experience with word processing, web browsing, and navigating the university’s campus computer network.
Preferred Requirements
  • Previous radio and/or audio production experience.
  • Proficiency with audio editing and playback software, e.g., Adobe Audition.
  • Experience operating radio control board and other audio equipment (CD players, computer hard drive playback).
Essential Functions

(50%) Host Weekend Edition – forward promote upcoming segments and insert local weather forecasts.

(45%) Record and produce promotional and programming announcements for later broadcast, tagging announcements from NPR and other public radio networks, and pre‑recording weather announcements.

(5%) Monitor station operating parameters, troubleshoot minor technical issues, and quickly notify JPR staff of larger issues.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Demonstrated customer service experience requiring high diplomacy and professionalism.
  • Ability to work with a high level of productivity and accuracy/attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational and time‑management skills, able to prioritize multiple assignments.
  • Excellent computer skills, proficient with word processing, spreadsheets, databases, online systems, social media platforms, internet, and online calendaring and email.
  • Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork, maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere within the university and with diverse populations.
  • Willingness and ability to work effectively in a heavily bureaucratic environment with regular interaction across multiple levels and outside agencies.
  • Working knowledge or ability to quickly learn university infrastructure, policies, and procedures.
Physical Demands
  • Must be able to sit for extended periods of time.
Special Conditions
  • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off‑site for occasional professional development.
  • Must be able to work additional hours and adjust working hours to meet special jobs; may be called back periodically for emergency work.
  • Must successfully pass a pre‑employment background check.
  • Position is non‑exempt and subject to FLSA overtime provisions.
  • Position holder is a mandatory reporter under Oregon Revised Statutes and must comply with requirements set by the Oregon Department of Human Services.
