Position Summary
The Pooled Recruitment program offers temporary summer camp appointments at Southern Oregon University. Appointments are part‑time, limited‑duration, and vary in salary and supervisory level. Positions may be for Black Youth Elder, Head Resident, Senior Counselor, or Instructor within the Black Youth Summer Camp.
Perks and CommitmentsCompensation Range: $15.50 – $40.00 per hour, depending on assignment.
Appointment Basis: Temporary/Short‑Term, Part‑time.
Benefits: Not eligible for benefits.
Supports Black students and camp staff, mentors students, and assists with workshops and classroom observation.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Personal experience working with Black youth and communities.
- Experience with middle and high school students.
- Strong communication, flexibility, and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to support student participants.
- Full‑time commitment during the Black Youth Summer Institute.
Duties (80%):
- Support the work of the Director and HRs.
- Act as a mentor to students.
- Provide support during workshops.
- Obstruct be present in classes to observe student and staff interactions.
- Present and support opening and closing sessions of camp.
- Support established ground rules for camp.
Duties (20%):
- Collaborate with Black Youth camp staff on program logistics.
- Attend staff training and be aware of emergency protocols.
Enthusiastic leader who manages staff logistics, mentors students, models responsible behavior, and monitors camp operations.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Experience with Black youth, middle and high school students.
- Experience leading teams and effective communication.
- Excellent organizational and time‑management skills.
- Ability to set priorities and coordinate multiple assignments.
- Proactive assessment of camp operations.
- At least two years of college; currently pursuing or attained a college degree.
Preferred:
- Basic First Aid and CPR training.
- At least one year of experience as a Black Youth Senior Counselor.
Duties (80%):
- Coordinate duties between the two Head Residents.
- Supervise Senior Counseling staff and act as a role model.
- Manage health and wellness initiatives and track emergencies.
Duties (20%):
- Attend required staff meetings and training sessions.
- Possibly lead some staff training sessions.
- Maintain awareness of camp activity flow and support as needed.
The Senior Counselor provides high‑energy, responsible supervision of 8–10 students, leading group activities and supporting students during non‑class periods.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Experience working with Black youth.
- Excellent organizational and time‑management skills.
- Excellent communication and calm, supportive demeanor, especially in crisis.
- Minimum age 18.
- Enrolled in college/university and completed freshman year.
Preferred:
- Basic First Aid and CPR training.
- Life Guard training.
Duties (80%):
- Directly supervise 8–12 assigned students.
- Lead group activities and provide counseling and problem‑solving.
- Assist with minor first aid and medication needs.
Duties (20%):
- Attend staff meetings and training sessions.
- Stay aware of camp activity flow and offer support.
- Alert Head Residents to emerging issues.
Designs and delivers engaging, four‑day curriculum for a class of Black youth, encouraging critical thinking and future college aspirations.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Experience teaching Black youth or working with Black communities.
- At least 1 year of subject matter experience; have completed undergraduate or be 20+ years old.
- Capacity to create age‑appropriate curriculum for 4 days of 90‑minute sessions.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A college graduate.
- 1+ years of professional teaching experience.
Duties (80%):
- Create curriculum for 4 days of classes.
- Arrive 15 minutes before class begins and remain until all students are safely transitioned.
- Maintain a learning climate and enforce camp policies.
Duties (20%):
- Attend staff training sessions.
- Prepare classroom and supplies before each class.
- Complete daily attendance and report absences.
