Position Summary
Instructions:
This pool is not for a specific position. By applying you are being considered for adjunct appointments at Southern Oregon University (SOU) during the posted triennium. Adjunct positions are temporary, part‑time, and limited‑duration teaching roles. Positions can be one term (thirteen weeks) or multiple terms as needed. Your application will be kept on file and you will be notified if a position becomes available that matches your educational background and experience.
You may withdraw your application at any time. The pool is refreshed triennially; you will be notified by hrs of the requirement to re‑apply for continued consideration.
Supplemental documents are encouraged: a letter outlining qualifications and interest; a current resume or CV; an unofficial copy of all post‑secondary transcripts. Optional documents may include teaching philosophy, teaching evaluations, and/or letters of recommendation.
Responsibilities- Teach and advise in Undergraduate Studies, including First‑Year Writing Seminar sequences, writing workshops, and other courses within Writing and UGS as needed.
- Provide academic advising to students enrolled in the writing courses.
- Prepare instructional materials, deliver direct instruction, and assess student work.
- Maintain office hours, respond to student inquiries via email or appointments, and facilitate student contact outside of class.
- Plan curriculum, lessons, and course objectives in collaboration with faculty mentors.
- Participate in occasional professional development and service activities such as program and institutional administrative committees.
- Engage in teaching activities that foster student learning, retention, support, and assessment.
- Demonstrated ability to teach process‑writing skills (pre‑draft, draft, revision, final product) and research essays.
- Experience teaching first‑year or first‑generation students and/or undergraduate seminar courses.
- Experience with student advising, particularly in helping students transition to university culture.
- Comfortable working with a diverse undergraduate population and commitment to diversity and inclusion.
- Proficiency with electronic classroom platforms such as Moodle, Canvas, or Blackboard and use of library databases.
- Commitment to teaching in face‑to‑face instructional settings (courses are not fully online).
- Adjunct Instructor:
Master’s or terminal degree in the discipline taught or a related field; or a Bachelor’s degree plus equivalency of a Master’s through professional experience. - Adjunct Assistant Professor:
Terminal degree in the discipline taught or a related field; or a Master’s degree and in the process of completing the terminal degree. - Demonstrated teaching potential and familiarity with necessary equipment.
- Master’s degree in the discipline taught or a related field.
- Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching, active participation in the life of the institution, and commitment to student support.
- Experience comparable to one‑academic year of full‑time college teaching or equivalent part‑time teaching activity.
- Professional experience in the field related to teaching assignment.
FLSA:
This position is exempt and not subject to overtime regulations. The incumbent is considered a mandated reporter under Oregon Revised Statutes and must comply with the Oregon Department of Human Services requirements. This position is not benefits eligible; however, eligibility may be considered if warranted.
Workload:
Typically less than 7.5 ELU per term, up to 15 ELU, or 45 ELU per year for 1.0 full‑time equivalence. Teaching assignments may include First‑Year Seminar, online and/or hybrid courses, and day, evening, and weekend courses across Medford and Ashland campuses.
