Position: (Pool) SOU Native Youth Program

Position Summary:

This pool is for Temporary Summer Camp appointments at Southern Oregon University. Qualified applicants will be considered for part‑time, limited‑duration positions with varying salaries, lengths, supervisory status, or program support. Applications are kept on file; qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring manager. Applicants may withdraw at any time. The pool may be refreshed annually and interested applicants must reapply for continued consideration.

Position

Description:

Summer camp and Native youth events held throughout the year. Positions vary; the following roles are currently available.

Konaway Nika Tillicum Elder

Role:
Support Native students as they explore relationships and develop into a community of Native youth at Konaway camp. Provide mentorship to students and support staff during classes, workshops, and events.

Qualifications
  • Expertise and experience working with Native students and communities.
  • Experience working with middle and high school students.
  • Strong communication skills, flexibility, and ability to problem‑solve quickly and efficiently.
  • Ability to support needs of student participants and make a full‑time commitment during Konaway.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience teaching or mentoring Native youth.
Duties

80% Support the Konaway Leadership team; lead or participate in events as required for Long House Nights; provide support to students and staff as a mentor and counselor.

20% Work with Konaway staff to support program logistics; attend staff training and be aware of emergency protocols.

Konaway Nika Tillicum Head Resident

Role:
Enthusiastic leader who works with youth, manages tasks, and models responsible behavior. Oversees senior counseling staff, health and wellness initiatives, and ensures a safe camp environment.

Qualifications
  • Experience working with Native youth, middle and high school students.
  • Experience leading teams with effective communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time‑management skills; ability to prioritize multiple assignments.
  • Proactive assessment of camp operations and anticipation of needs.
  • Basic First Aid and CPR training.
  • At least one year of experience as a Konaway Nika Tillicum Senior Counselor.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Completed at least two years of college and currently pursuing or have attained a college degree.
Duties

80% Coordinate and divide Head Resident duties; supervise Senior Counseling staff; manage health and wellness initiatives; track emergencies and health incidents at camp.

20% Attend required staff meetings and training sessions; lead some training sessions; maintain awareness of camp activity flow and proactively support where needed.

Konaway Nika Tillicum Senior Counselor

Role:
Enthusiastic, high‑energy, responsible, and emotionally stable individual who serves as a role model for participants. Supervises 8‑10 students during non‑class times and provides mentorship.

Qualifications
  • Personal experience working with Native youth or communities.
  • Excellent organizational and time‑management skills in a changing environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Positive attitude and calm, efficient support in crisis situations.
  • At least 18 years old; enrolled in college and completed freshman year.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Basic First Aid and CPR training; life guard training.
Duties

80% Directly responsible for 8‑12 students; lead group activities; provide counseling and problem‑solving; assist with minor first aid; support medication needs as outlined by parents or guardians.

20% Attend required staff meetings and training sessions; maintain awareness of camp activity flow; proactively support where needed; alert Head Residents to emerging issues.

Konaway Nika Tillicum Instructor

Role:
Develop and implement engaging, age‑appropriate curricula for a class of students over four consecutive days. Cultivate a safe, supportive learning environment with clear expectations for safety, respect, and responsibility.

Qualifications
  • Experience teaching Native youth or working in Native communities.
