Position Summary

POOLED ADJUNCTS:
By applying to this pool, you are not applying for a specific position. You are submitting your application to be considered for adjunct appointments that may become available at Southern Oregon University during the posted triennium. Adjuncts are for specific temporary, part‑time, limited‑duration teaching positions. Positions can be one term (thirteen weeks) or multiple terms as needed. Your application will be kept on file and you will be contacted if a position becomes available that matches your educational background and experience.

You can withdraw your application from the pool at any time. This pool will be refreshed triennially and you will be notified by hrs of the requirement to re-apply for continued consideration.

Preferred supplemental documents: (1) a letter detailing your qualifications and interest; (2) a current resume/CV; and (3) an unofficial copy of all post‑secondary transcripts. Optional documents may include teaching philosophy, teaching evaluations, and/or letters of recommendation.

Responsibilities

Individuals appointed from this pool will primarily teach courses within the following areas:
Criminology & Criminal Justice, Economics, History, International Studies, and Power & Politics. Specific course teaching needs vary by term; introductory courses in criminal law, criminology, and law enforcement, macro and microeconomics, U.S. and world history, international studies, and surveys of public policy, law, American politics, and international politics are among the areas in demand. Faculty are expected to: prepare and deliver instruction, assess student learning, provide office hours and student support, plan courses and curricula, maintain instructional technology, conduct professional development, and participate in service activities.

Faculties may also be required to travel for professional development.

Qualifications
  • Adjunct Instructor (term‑by‑term): Master’s or terminal degree in the discipline taught or a related field; or a Bachelor’s degree in the discipline taught plus equivalency of a Master’s degree based on professional experience. Demonstrated teaching potential and familiarity with required equipment.
  • Adjunct Assistant Professor: Terminal degree in the discipline taught or in process of completing one; or Master’s degree in the discipline taught with ongoing completion of a terminal degree. Demonstrated teaching potential and familiarity with required equipment.
  • Preferred for both ranks: Master’s degree in the discipline taught or related field; demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching and active participation in the life of the institution.
  • Commitment to student learning, retention, support, and assessment is critical.
  • Professional experience that equates to one academic year of full‑time college teaching, or one academic year of combined part‑time teaching while a graduate student, is preferred.
  • Subject‑specific experience in advanced teaching assignments for the respective discipline.
Compensation

The anticipated rate is $650/ELU for non‑terminally prepared adjunct instructors (term‑by‑term) and $750/ELU for terminally prepared adjunct instructors (term‑by‑term). Graduate‑level courses may be paid at a higher rate. A typical 4‑credit course is loaded at 4 ELU.

Benefits & Eligibility

Appointments are exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act and are not subject to overtime regulations.
