POSITION SUMMARY

Positions are for specific temporary, part‑time, limited‑duration teaching appointments at Southern Oregon University within the triennium.
RESPONSIBILITIES- Teach undergraduate courses in Science, including laboratory sections and non‑major lecture courses in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science & Policy, and Physics.
- Prepare course materials, deliver instruction, assess student performance, and provide student contact outside of class (office hours, appointments, email).
- Maintain laboratory safety and instructional quality, including use of instrumentation, data acquisition software, and hazardous materials.
- Support student learning, retention, and assessment; participate in program and institutional administrative, committee, and student support activities.
- Engage in professional development to remain current in the discipline taught; may participate in scholarly or creative activities as required.
- Willingness to travel for training, work additional hours, and respond to occasional emergency assignments.
- Master’s or terminal degree in the discipline taught or a related field, OR a Bachelor’s degree with an equivalency of a Master’s in years of professional experience.
- Demonstrated teaching potential and familiarity with the appropriate equipment and practices for the discipline.
- Knowledge of biological concepts, laboratory procedures, data analysis, and safety practices, OR knowledge of chemistry general educational methods, instrumentation, and safety, OR knowledge of environmental science & policy concepts and laboratory practices, OR knowledge of physics laboratory procedures and safety.
- Ability to use compounds and dissecting microscopes, biological and chemical health and safety practices, and data acquisition software as applicable.
- Successful completion of a Criminal Background Check.
- Master’s degree in the discipline taught or a related field.
- Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching, student engagement, and taking an active role in the life of the institution.
- For adjunct assistant professors, evidence of a record of scholarship or professional experience equating to one academic year of full‑time college teaching or a graduate teaching position.
- Compensation: $650/ELU for non‑terminally prepared adjunct instructors and $750/ELU for terminally prepared adjunct instructors (term‑by‑term). Graduate‑level courses may be paid at a higher rate.
- Full‑time equivalency: typically less than 7.5 ELU per term, up to 15 ELU per term or 45 ELU per year for 1.0 full‑time equivalence.
- Incumbent is not benefits eligible; position is exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
- Work may include first‑year seminar, online or hybrid courses, Medford and Ashland campus classes, day, evening, and weekend courses.
- Must be willing to travel and attend professional development off‑site and work additional hours as needed.
Position is designated as a critical, security‑sensitive or safety‑sensitive position; a background check is required. The incumbent is a mandated reporter under Oregon law and must comply with the Oregon Department of Human Services requirements. This position is not benefits eligible; eligibility may be considered if working conditions warrant. The position is exempt and not subject to overtime regulations.
