Position: Adjunct Instructor/Music including Applied Music Lessons

Position Summary

Applicants are being considered for adjunct teaching appointments in the Music Department at Southern Oregon University for the posted triennium. Positions are temporary, part‑time, and limited in duration, ranging from one term (thirteen weeks) to multiple terms as needed.

Applicants should submit a letter of interest, a current resume/CV, and an unofficial copy of all post‑secondary transcripts. Optional documents may include a teaching philosophy, teaching evaluations, and or letters of recommendation.

Rate of Pay

Music courses: $650 per ELU for non‑terminally prepared adjunct instructors and $750 per ELU for terminally prepared adjunct instructors. A typical 4‑credit course is loaded at 4 ELUs. Graduate‑level courses may be paid at a higher rate. Applied Music Lessons are billed at $60 per hour.

Full‑Time Equivalency

Typically less than 7.5 ELU per term but up to 15 ELU per term or 45 ELU per year for a 1.0 full‑time equivalence.

Position Description
  • Music Department – General Studies: Prepare students to perform, teach, create, and support music making through a liberal arts curriculum. Applicants should have a terminal degree in music; a master’s degree is considered depending on experience. Online teaching experience is desirable.
  • Music Department – Applied: Provide individual instruction in woodwinds, brass, percussion, piano/keyboard, guitar, and voice. Instructors must participate in a one‑time jury session each fall and spring. Vocal instructors may conduct weekly studio sessions. A terminal degree is preferred; a master’s degree is acceptable.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Adjunct Instructor (term‑by‑term):
    Master’s or terminal degree in the discipline or a bachelor’s degree plus equivalent professional experience; demonstrated teaching potential; familiarity with required equipment.
  • Adjunct Assistant Professor:
    Terminal degree in the discipline or a master’s degree in progress toward the terminal degree; demonstrated teaching potential; familiarity with required equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Adjunct Instructor:
    Master’s degree, demonstrated potential for teaching excellence, active participation in institutional life, commitment to student learning and assessment.
  • Adjunct Assistant Professor:
    Demonstrated potential for teaching excellence, record of scholarship, professional teaching experience equivalent to one full‑time academic year.
Duties

The primary responsibility of a faculty member is teaching, which includes academic advising, office hours, course and curriculum planning, and assessment.

  • Teaching duties: preparation, direct instruction, assessment, student contact outside class, presenting complex concepts to diverse learners, responding to questions in real time, applying critical judgment.
  • Lab or workshop duties: provide practical experience with instrumentation and equipment, ensure safety, manage multiple students, demonstrate complex procedures.
  • Professional development: maintain currency in the discipline.
  • Service: participate in program and institutional administrative activities, committees, and student support and retention activities.

  • Willingness to travel for occasional professional development and training programs.
  • Ability to work additional hours and adjust schedule as required.
  • Successful completion of a pre‑employment background check.
  • Exempt from overtime under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
  • Mandated reporter under Oregon Revised Statutes.
  • Not a benefits‑eligible position; eligibility may be considered if circumstances change.
  • Workload expectations are outlined in the APSOU CBA, Article 19.
