Description
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
GED Teacher - To help adults build academic skills in the areas of reading, writing, math, science, and history. The desired outcome is for the adult to either complete the GED or to find employment with the newly learned skills. The adult education teacher is responsible for planning, delivering and evaluating instruction based upon specific goals and objectives established by Hanover County Public Schools and in accordance with the Office of Adult Education of the Virginia Department of Education.
English Language Learner Teacher
-To help Non English speaking adults learn the basics of the English language, spoken and written. The adult education teacher is responsible for planning, delivering and evaluating instruction based upon specific goals and objectives established by Hanover County Public Schools and in accordance with the Office of Adult Education of the Virginia Department of Education.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

- Demonstrates mastery of content area;
- Prepares instruction and activities using the division's curriculum to assigned classes and shows evidence of preparation upon request of the supervisors;
- Assesses students' learning on an ongoing basis and alters instruction to meet group/individual needs;
- Develops summative tests of students' learning and uses results for further student instruction, grading, and placement;
- Develops and maintains a favorable psychological and physical environment that is conducive to effective learning;
- Maintains order and encourages students to set and maintain high standards of classroom behavior within the classroom setting in accordance with division guidelines regarding pupil behavior management.
- Selects and utilizes materials appropriate to the students' instructional levels;
- Organizes learning activities to achieve specific concepts;
- Attends and participates in district level in-service training programs, faculty and department meetings;
- Establishes friendly and cooperative relationships between the home and the school;
- Establishes and maintains cooperative professional relations with others;
- Demonstrates commitment to improving professional competence;
- Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities;
- Maintains accurate, complete and correct records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulations;
- Performs other duties as assigned by the administration in accordance with the school division's policies and practices.
KNOWLEDGE,
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
:
Comprehensive knowledge of: modern practices, techniques, and methods for teaching adult students; the principles of educational testing and principles and methods of remedial education; the needs and requirements of working with students with disabilities; the principles and methods of educational research. Ability to: apply modern methods and principles of education to pupils functioning at the adult education level; maintain an interest in the positive improvement and development of adults of normal and/or impaired learning ability;
maintain proper discipline; establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and students. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:Required:
Bachelors Degree from an accredited institution; excellent communication and record keeping skills. Requires an equivalent combination of experience and training which would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities to be effective in this position.
Preferred:
Master's Degree from accredited institution and courses in professional education.

GED Teacher - Monday, Wednesday, and Friday (9am-11am) at Pamunkey Regional Jail

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS:
Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees, students and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Work is typically performed in a school setting including;
classroom, gym, cafeteria, auditorium and recreational areas. Frequent walking, standing, occasional lifting up to 25 pounds may be required. Occasional travel may be necessary. Occasional movement of students…
