Description
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
To provide appropriate educational program designed to meet the special needs of the deaf and hearing-impaired student within the public school; to provide services supplementing the regular education program with resource help; to consult with teacher and community agencies to facilitate achievement of student in the regular classroom. Responsible for planning, delivering and evaluating instruction based upon specific goals and objectives established by Hanover County Public Schools and Virginia Standards of Learning.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

- Participate in child study, eligibility and IEP meetings.
- Present written and oral reports to school eligibility or IEP committees and assist in determining educational implications of evaluation findings.
- Assess student's performance and needs and write IEP's based on the assessment and assist in administering standardized tests when necessary.
- Provide direct or consult/integrated services to each child as stated on IEP.
- Teach academics, auditory training, speech and speech reading.
- Aid students in language development (whether oral, signed English or American Sign Language).
- Sign in English and ASL when required.
- Utilize and trouble shoot auditory equipment.
- Consult with team members and regular teachers regarding students in the mainstream.
- Guide and work with interpreters assigned with teacher's students.
- Travel by personal car to assigned school.
- Document attendance and daily therapy programming.
- Serve as case manager when HI is primary related service.
- Assist in transitioning special education therapy students from one educational program to another or from one school to another.
- Performs duties as established by the School Board Policy 49-2.
KNOWLEDGE,
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
:
Comprehensive knowledge of: modern practices, techniques, and methods of teaching; the principles of educational testing and principles and methods of remedial education; effective means of supervision and instruction as applied to the work of Instructional Assistants; the needs and requirements of working with students with disabilities; the principles and methods of educational research. Ability to: apply modern methods and principles of education to pupils functioning at the elementary and/or secondary school level;
maintain an interest in the positive improvement and development of children, adolescents, or adults of normal and/or impaired learning ability; maintain proper discipline; establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and students. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Must hold a current (or be eligible for) Virginia License in Hearing Impaired grades NK - 12. Must have a record of successful full-time teaching experience or have demonstrated a successful internship. The position requires expertise in language development and oral-aural rehabilitation communication (manual English, American Sign Language, Cued speech).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must hold or be eligible for Va. Teacher License with endorsement in Special Education Deaf and Hard of Hearing Impairment.
