Position Details

Randolph-Macon College invites applications for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor in the Department of English to begin Fall 2027.

Randolph-Macon College is a nationally recognized residential institution of about 1800 students located in Ashland, Virginia, just north of Richmond. Founded in 1830, the college offers a broad range of academic programs, including a graduate program in PA studies. The RMC curriculum, grounded in a liberal arts core, fosters intellectual growth and personal development, with a steadfast focus on helping students find and pathways through college and to successful outcomes.

The English department gives students an understanding of human nature, society, and history, while at the same time honing their powers of expression. The major thus caters to a wide variety of students, from those with a lifelong love of language and reading, to those who write poetry and fiction, to those eager to understand how language may be used to entertain, move, or persuade.

English majors find community in the Washington Literary Society, contribute to our literary journal The Stylus, and participate in unique internship opportunities. An RMC English degree provides students with critical thinking and communication skills that have repeatedly shown themselves valuable in an array of professions as various as law, advertising, teaching, and politics.

Randolph-Macon College faculty teach, advise, conduct research and engage in scholarship, and serve the college and department. Primary teaching responsibilities will include introductory-level English courses, contributions to the first-year writing program, and seminars in the applicant’s area of expertise.

• Ph.D. in English (or a related field); we will consider candidates who will complete their degree by August 1, 2027
• Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching
• Evidence of a commitment to undergraduate teaching and student engagement
• Experience working with students and a demonstrated commitment to pedagogical methods that support all learners in reaching their maximum potential
• Evidence of scholarly activity

• A clear research agenda with the potential to produce scholarly publications in an area of contemporary literature/21st-c. global anglophone literature
• The ability to contribute additional courses that add to departmental offerings in a secondary specialization such as rhetoric and composition, gender and sexuality studies, postcolonial literature, media studies, environmental humanities, or digital humanities
