The Mission of the Ashland Fire Department is to be a recognized leader in the preservation of life, property and the environment.
Under supervision of the Fire Lieutenant, the P.O.C firefighter/EMT shall provide the highest possible level of fire, rescue and pre-hospital emergency medical services (EMS) functions to include but not limited to: performing fire suppression, basic life support emergency medical care, and other fire service related duties within the community, both locally and regionally.
This position will work as needed for emergency incidents as well as scheduled ambulance standby events. Required attendance at monthly training events is required. Experience preferred, but training will be available to applicants who are willing to commit to serving their community.
MinimumRequired Qualifications & Preferences
- Valid National Registry EMT, certification preferred.
- Recent EMT program graduates or those who will soon graduate are encouraged to apply.
- Ability to obtain a Wisconsin EMS license prior to orientation training is required.
- State of Wisconsin/IFSAC Firefighter I preferred-required within a year of being hired.
- Valid Driver’s License is required.
- High School Diploma or GED/HSED is required.
- CPAT certificate preferred, required for orientation training
- BLS or ALS 911 EMS experience.
- Must be able to pass physical ability testing.
- Must be able to pass medical screening.
- IFSAC or Pro Board Certifications
- Work experience in construction, plumbing, electrical, heavy equipment operations, health care, or information technology.
- Within 12 months from hire date, the employee must reside within 45 minutes of the Ashland Fire Department

The Ashland Fire Department is an all hazards agency. Ashland Paid-on-call firefighters provide auxiliary support for structural firefighting, basic life support emergency medical service, vehicle extrication, wildland firefighting, ice rescue and hazardous materials response. The Ashland Fire Department provides fire protection to the City of Ashland and 3 townships for a coverage area of 123 square miles. Emergency Medical Services are provided to the City of Ashland and 6 townships with a coverage area of 400 square miles.
In addition, paramedic intercepts are provided to 10 EMT-Basic ambulance services.
The Ashland Fire Department staffs one station and employs a Fire Chief, 20 full-time firefighters and 2 auxiliary EMTs. Each shift consists of a Captain/Paramedic, a Lieutenant/Paramedic, 3 Firefighter/Paramedics, and 2 Firefighter/EMTs. Once fully trained, the Paid-on-call staff will be called into work for fires, multiple EMS calls, or larger incidents.
