INTENT: The intent of this position description is to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by employees assigned to this job title. This position description is not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required.
GENERAL
PURPOSE:
This is a highly skilled position involving the safe and efficient use of a variety of equipment used in the operation, maintenance and repair of City streets, stormwater, parks and building facilities. The position also requires heavy physical labor.
Normal working hours are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with lunch break from 12:00 p.m. to 12:30 p.m. but may vary based on the needs of the Department. The position has the potential for over‑time to address emergencies or other tasks as assigned.
SECTION A – REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIESTo perform the job successfully an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required at the time of hire or for continuation of employment.
Knowledge of:
- Basic carpentry, plumbing, masonry, painting and electrical maintenance
- Methods used in snow plowing
- Various street maintenance and repair methods and techniques.
- Various storm sewer maintenance and repair methods and techniques.
- Basic knowledge and experience in general mechanics and construction
- Basic knowledge of gas and diesel engine maintenance and operation.
- Basic knowledge of tools and equipment used for landscaping, tree care, and grounds maintenance
- Knowledge and experience in welding is desirable
Ability to:
- Operate and maintain automotive and hand‑held power tools and equipment
- Use hand tools and handheld power tools for various tasks and perform highly‑skilled maintenance work for structures including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and masonry tasks
- Operate and maintain various heavy and light equipment in a safe manner
- Perform basic mathematics
- Read and interpret technical drawings and GIS mapping
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required for this position
- Secondary education in a related field is desirable but not required
- Must be 18 years of age by the start date of this position.
- Be able to work a 40‑hour work week.
- Possess excellent communication skills in order to clearly articulate issues and alternative solutions.
- Valid Driver's License is required with an acceptable (insurable) driving record or the ability to acquire a driver license is a continuing requirement of employment.
- Possession of a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or ability to obtain one via City provided training within one (1) year is required.
- Must be able to read and write English proficiently in order to maintain safety procedures.
- Demonstrate aptitude for job duties.
