Responsibilities
- Troubleshoot and perform unit maintenance on internal combustion engines and accessories, power train and chassis components of light‑wheel vehicles.
- Operate a variety of tools and equipment such as cutting torch, welder, forklift, hand tools, power tools (impact wrench, drills, etc.) and electric meters.
- Perform daily, weekly, monthly, semi‑annual and annual maintenance according to manufacturer’s specifications on all equipment.
- Test and operate vehicles and equipment as required and observe for evidence of abnormal operation.
- Respond to call‑out maintenance duties.
- Perform maintenance operations on both light and heavy equipment.
- Diagnose malfunctions of light‑wheel vehicles and associated items.
- Perform the duties of a wheel and track vehicle mechanic.
- Maintain shop facilities and upkeep of hand and power tools.
- Perform power repairs and preventative maintenance checks and services in accordance with appropriate maintenance schedules.
- Complete applicable work orders, maintenance forms and records.
- Employ basic maintenance techniques to correct malfunctions of mechanical, electrical, air and hydraulic brake systems or components.
- Perform preventative maintenance on tools, repair parts, equipment and assigned vehicles.
- Determine proper tools and equipment to be used for unit maintenance tasks.
- Operate and assist in the operation of vehicles in conjunction with maintenance operations.
- Organize work area to gain maximum efficiency and productivity in terms of time, tools and equipment.
- Operate vehicles and equipment for diagnosis and inspection purposes.
- Apply and adhere to required safety procedures.
- Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
- Align and adjust assemblies and components so equipment is functioning within the prescribed limits and tolerance.
- Read, understand and apply information contained in unit maintenance technical manuals and basic schematic diagrams.
- Isolate and identify causes and malfunctions.
- Perform limited cutting operations in support of the welder on staff.
- Use proper rigging techniques to attach and secure hoists, cables and slings using authorized equipment.
High School diploma or equivalent; formal mechanical training preferred.
Experience / Specific Knowledge- Must have hands‑on related experience.
- Must have demonstrated troubleshooting and repair skills.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a TWIC clearance and/or any other security clearances as required.
- Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to use hand tools.
- Ability to read directions and prints as well as to inspect machine parts closely to ensure they meet specification.
- Demonstrated aptitude to execute and maintain necessary records.
- Knowledge of methods, materials, tools and techniques used in heavy equipment and vehicle repair and maintenance.
- Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions, including manufacturer’s service specifications.
- Must be able to take direction / supervision and work cooperatively with other people.
- Must be able to communicate, verbally and in writing, in English.
- Must be able to use hand tools.
- Must have manual dexterity sufficient to operate machinery for precision work.
- Must be able to perform work requiring frequent stooping and bending.
- Must be able to stand for protracted periods of time.
- Physical requirements include, but are not limited to, working outside in varying weather conditions, lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds and performing work at heights up to 80 feet.
- Must be willing and able to work additional days / hours if necessary.
- Fast‑paced environment; deadline‑oriented.
- Successful candidate subject to successful completion of background check and pre‑employment and random / post‑accident drug screens.
- Must be willing to join bargaining unit.
