Job Overview
Our Madison, WI office seeks a Field Engineer I to join our growing Transportation Construction Engineering team.
Responsibilities- Construction engineering and inspection of large highway and bridge construction projects in the Madison area and throughout southwest Wisconsin.
- Collaborating with the Transportation Construction Services team and project stakeholders to perform inspection, documentation, and materials verification.
- Assisting with construction field work tasks and activities on a project to ensure conformance to plans, specifications, and other contract documents. Coordinates and schedules quality control inspections.
- Observing on‑site material testing and coordinating testing and monitoring services. Performing mathematical calculations for material quantity payments. Performing basic shop drawing review and ensuring that procedures and materials comply with plans and specifications.
- Reading and interpreting construction drawings and specifications and identifying discrepancies or conflicts within the documents.
- Reviewing contractor’s daily construction reports for accuracy, thoroughness and consistency. Regularly reviewing contractor's as‑built mark‑ups, documenting project progress using video and photo and preparing reports on construction progress.
- Consulting with Resident Engineer on work progress and construction problems, proactively recommending solutions, assisting in the resolution of issues, and acting as a liaison with the engineer of record.
- Remaining current and knowledgeable of industry technology and tools used to perform inspection work through industry resources, training, and research. Gaining exposure to new technology and utilizing it (GPS/Rovers) to increase efficiency and accuracy of inspection tasks.
- Performing office engineer work as needed including preparing meeting agendas and minutes, assisting in processing and tracking logs for RFIs, submittals, pay estimates and other deliverables.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
- Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
- Desired
Skills:- Identifies discrepancies or conflicts within documents and gains familiarity with quality of work performed using inspection checklists.
- Writes daily inspection reports, tracks work performed, and computes pay item quantities at a basic level with direction from more experienced staff.
- Understands shop drawing review and can read and interpret contractor's CPM schedule at a basic level.
- Preferred:
- Engineer in Training (EIT).
- Trained in digital construction management software such as Constructware, Asite or similar.
- Experience working on WisDOT transportation projects.
