Interim Technical Director (Temporary, Season Closeout)

Theatre Aspen, the award-winning professional Equity theatre company located beneath Aspen Mountain in the heart of the Colorado mountains, produces an acclaimed summer repertory season, year‑round education programming, and special events, earning a national reputation for Broadway‑caliber work in one of America’s most distinctive theatrical settings.

Position Summary

Theatre Aspen is seeking a temporary Interim Technical Director to lead our production team through the final weeks of our 2026 season. This short‑term engagement runs from August 23 through the end of September 2026 and covers the technical changeover from Grease into our Solo Flights festival, followed by the full closeout and winterization of our production site.

This is a hands‑on, execution‑focused role ideal for a technical director or senior production professional available for a concentrated, short‑term engagement. You will step in for our outgoing Technical Director and work closely with the Producing Artistic Director and production staff to ensure a seamless festival changeover and a well‑executed end‑of‑season shutdown.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Solo Flights Festival Changeover: Oversee the strike of Grease and the technical load‑in and changeover into Theatre Aspen’s Solo Flights festival configuration, coordinating with the Producing Artistic Director, Production Manager, and production staff.
  • Festival Technical Support: Provide technical oversight for the Solo Flights festival run, supervising crew and troubleshooting technical needs as they arise.
  • Tent Winterization: Install and manage heating systems to protect the tent structure, equipment, and site through the shoulder season and into winterization.
  • Equipment & Rental Returns: Coordinate the return of all rented lighting, sound, and technical equipment to vendors, ensuring accurate inventory and timely pickup.
  • Backlot & Site Restoration: Oversee removal of production trailers from the backlot and lead general end‑of‑season restoration of the production site.
  • Transition & Handoff: Work alongside outgoing staff where possible to ensure continuity of institutional knowledge, vendor relationships, and site‑specific procedures.

Qualifications:

  • Experience in technical direction, production management, or scenic/lighting/sound strike and load‑out processes.
  • Experience coordinating equipment rental returns, vendor logistics, and site closeout, ideally for an outdoor or seasonal venue.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal onboarding.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in changing mountain weather, climbing ladders, lifting up to 75 pounds, and operating power tools.
  • Full availability for the entire engagement period, August 23 through the end of September 2026.
  • Rigging or ETCP experience a plus.

Location Requirement: This is a temporary, on‑site position based in Aspen, Colorado, for the duration of the contract. Housing and r/t travel provided.

If you are a technical theatre professional looking for a focused, short‑term engagement in one of the most beautiful settings in the country, we invite you to apply.

Job Type: Temporary, Full‑Time (August 23 – end of September 2026)

Pay: $1,200 – $1,500 per week, based on experience.

To apply please send resume and cover letter to resumes with the subject line “Interim Technical Director.”

Theatre Aspen is an equal opportunity employer and understands that the work to create equitable theatre on and offstage is never done. We pledge to continually pursue equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility in our hiring, casting, education, and performance practices.
