The Natural Resource Supervisor supports the implementation of restoration, ecological enhancement and biodiversity projects on Open Space and Trails (OST) properties. Conducts land stewardship fieldwork and oversees natural resources field staff.

Responsibilities
  • Provides supervision for Natural Resource field staff and assists management in coordinating and implementing field projects across OST properties; delegates daily work priorities and participates in their completion; supervises assigned staff; trains and coaches employees, provides feedback to management on performance/evaluation, assists with hiring and disciplinary actions.
  • Responsible for maintaining and coordinating field equipment and material needs; maintains inventories; ensures that equipment is maintained and operable; conducts basic repairs in the field and schedules repair or replacement of equipment as needed.
  • Monitors OST properties to develop, coordinate, and implement annual noxious weed management and other vegetation projects; trains OST Natural Resource and maintenance staff on weed control techniques.
  • Responsible for various administrative tasks such as onboarding and timekeeping.
  • Utilizes field mapping and GIS systems to maintain records and conduct research; collects and manages field data and spatial information, including GIS field maps and weed control records.
  • Reads and interprets plan-sets for implementation.
  • Supports the relationship between Pitkin County government and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and County staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and County information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
Qualifications
  • 3+ years experience at a senior-level in a land management related field.
  • Bachelor's Degree required in Natural Resource Management or similar, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Pesticide Applicator Certified Operator License required within two months of hire.
  • S-212, Wildland Fire Chainsaw Certification required within the first season.
  • First Aid/CPR Certification required within the first season.
  • GPS/GIS field data collection experience required.
  • Must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s License and acceptable Motor Vehicle Record.
  • Thorough knowledge of local plants/noxious weed  experience with invasive weed management techniques/practices; knowledge of Pitkin County geography as it pertains to roads, trails, and open spaces; possesses basic trade skills.

Physical Demands
  • Majority of work is performed outdoors with exposure to inclement weather conditions and potentially dangerous tools and equipment. Regularly walks over uneven terrain. Ability to hike up to 10 miles per day.
  • Position requires hearing, talking, sitting, standing, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movements.
  • The position requires both near and far vision for inspecting work and operating assigned equipment. Lifting, carrying and pushing tools, equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds is also required.
  • Materials and chemicals may expose the employee to fumes, dust and air contaminants.
  • This position may also engage with members of the public while conducting fieldwork. Ability to interact positively with the public and effectively communicate project goals.
