Job Title: Streets/Heavy Equipment Operator II

Department: Streets

Classification: Non-Exempt

Hiring Range: $31.15 per hour – $38.94 per hour

Salary Range: $31.15 per hour – $46.72 per hour

Position Summary

Work as part of a tight-knit streets team operating street department vehicles and heavy equipment for street repair, snow removal, and storm drain installation and maintenance, consistent with the organization’s values and mission statement.

Supervision Exercised and Received

This position works under the direct supervision of the Streets Superintendent.

Essential Job Functions
  • Equipment used: Front End Loader, Motor Grader, Backhoe, Snow Cat, Sweeper, Dump Truck, Water Truck, Skid Steer, Roller.
  • Equipment Operation
    :
    Operates and maintains all kinds of heavy equipment and vehicles. Performs pre‑trip inspections, fuels, lubricates, performs minor repairs, and keeps equipment clean and in good operating order.
  • Sign Maintenance
    :
    Maintains inventory of street sign materials; installs and repairs street signs.
  • Summer Work
    :
    Repairs streets by removing and replacing asphalt, crack sealing, using asphalt paver, sweeps and flushes streets, assists in Pavement Management Program, paints crosswalks, flags traffic, on‑call rotational basis during summer.
  • Winter Work
    :
    Plows/ removes snow, widens streets with mobilized snow blower or motor grader, performs anti‑icing/de‑icing, sands streets, cuts ice pack, sweeps and flushes weather permitting, operates asphalt patching equipment, night work and on‑call during winter season.
  • Emergency Response
    :
    Available for 24‑hour call‑out during winter and occasional summer periods for snow removal, sweeping, mudslide monitoring, sandbagging, debris cleanup, sign repairs.
  • Special Projects
    :
    May support special events such as the 4th of July parade.

Minimum Requirements
  • Education
    :
    High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Experience
    : 2 to 5 years as an equipment operator.
  • Licenses & Certifications
    :
    • Valid Colorado Driver’s License or obtain within 30 days.
    • Class B Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker endorsement or heavy equipment operator certification. Employees hired without a Class B CDL must obtain the CDL with Tanker endorsement within six months.
    • City‑Paid Initial Training:
      City covers cost of first CDL training within first six months of hire.
  • Technical Knowledge
    :
    Proficient with Microsoft Word and Outlook; basic computer understanding.
  • Additional Requirements
    :
    • Drug and alcohol testing as required for CDL holders.
    • 5/6 panel drug test, physical examination, criminal background check.
    • Equipment Skills Test may be required.

Position Type and Work Hours
  • Regular, Full‑Time:
    Monday‑Friday, 40 hours/week; hours and days vary.
  • Shift work: days, evenings, graveyard shifts on rotating schedule.
  • On‑call during winter season (October‑April) including nights, weekends, holidays.
  • Hours may vary with operational needs.
Work Environment
  • Outdoors/Off‑Site:
    Majority outdoors, extreme temperature variations, noise, fumes; snow plowing, exposure to hazards.
  • Indoors:
    Occasional office work for meetings, trainings, and administrative tasks.
Physical Demands

Visual acuity, balancing, bending, carrying, crouching, climbing, hand/foot coordination, gripping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, pushing/pulling, reaching, repetitive motions, sitting, standing, stooping, talking, walking. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
