JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: #450 - Library Assistant 0.9375 FTE Grades KG-2 ASTOR 2026/27 SY
REPORTS TO: Site Administrator
EVALUATED BY: Site Administrator
JOB SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the district librarian or principal, the library assistant performs a variety of duties which may include organizing and supervising library activities; overseeing library software, the library collection, and space; selecting, ordering and processing library materials; supervising students during structured and unstructured time; and other work as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS OF POSITIONS:
- High School Diploma or equivalent as required by OAR , Oregon Department of Education
- Must be 18 years of age
- Must be able to pass a background check
- Ability to work harmoniously with others and communicate effectively (both orally and in writing) with students, parents and staff
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to be highly organized
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Ability to exercise initiative in the follow-up with students and teachers regarding student behavior
- Use computer technology to facilitate instruction
- Ability to demonstrate the use of reference materials
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff and the general public.
- Understanding of audiovisual equipment, computers and office machines and their operation.
- Understanding of a general budget, accounting and record-keeping procedures.
- Accurately transfer, record and convey information, materials and money as required by the position
- Perform physical requirements which may include:
- Moderate degree of physical stamina
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, and occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to use telephone, computer, and other office equipment
- Ability to make frequent trips to and from desks, counters, etc. as well as other areas in the school building
- Supervises students in informal settings and formal settings
- Trains and manages student workers and volunteers
- Conducts a yearly inventory of library materials and makes every effort to ensure all materials are returned to the library
- Procedures for indexing, processing, organizing, maintaining and disseminating library materials
- Maintains library space as an attractive and inviting setting
- Attends and participates in meetings and training with other library staff and serves as a communication link between libraries
- Ability to use library software to circulate materials, manage student records, and run reports
- Communicates with parents concerning overdue library materials
- Maintains a collaborative relationship between students and staff to ensure maximal use of the library media center and its resources
- With consultation with the building administrator make decisions about ordering for the library
- Assists with the implementation of reading activities and programs
- Able to organize and maintain library collection including repairs and weeding
- Assists students and staff with using the library and library software
- Inspire interest and create enthusiasm for the maximum use of the media center
- Read, understand and carry out oral and written instructions
- Establish and maintain accurate record systems
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, teachers, administrators, co-workers, supervisors, and the public
- Maintain a high level of organization according to recognized and/or directed practices to ensure immediate access to information and resources
- Acts as a mandated abuse reporter
- Knowledge of Astoria School District Policies and building procedures
- Regular and acceptable attendance is required
- Performs other duties as assigned
SALARY RANGE: $23.85/hourly
