Instructional Assistant (Consortium/Self-Contained/Special Needs/Medical)

The Special Needs/Medical/Self-Contained/Consortium Instructional Assistant assists in the supervision and instruction of students with diverse learning needs under the supervision of a certificated teacher in a special education classroom and/or as part of a pullout program; observe and document student progress; implement Individual Education Plans (IEPs); provide personal hygiene and medical support for students and clerical support to the teacher. This role requires significant flexibility to adapt to student needs and includes supporting classroom hygiene and cleaning.

Qualifications of Position:
High School Diploma or equivalent knowledge, experience or training as required by OAR , Oregon Department of Education. Must be 18 years of age. Job-related experience is preferred or equivalent transferable skills. Must be able to pass a fingerprint/background check. Ability to multitask and manage high-volume, dynamic classroom environments. Type 20 Certification (is preferred but not required). Perform physical requirements, which may include:
Moderate degree of physical stamina Frequent standing, walking, and bending Occasional lifting up to 50 lbs Engaging in de-escalation strategies and/or physical intervention if necessary (Training/OIS Certification provided). Possible exposure to bodily fluids in assisting students with using restrooms and tending to illness or injury (Bloodborne Pathogen Training provided).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Review and support students IEP. Provide input on possible accommodations. Ability to maintain the confidentiality of students and their records. Maintains instructional materials and/or student files/records (e.g. collects and maintains student data, adapting instructional materials, student files, checking papers, attendance, audiovisual equipment, set up projects, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring availability of items and/or providing reliable information. Ability to assist students with personal hygiene tasks (diapering, for example).

Ability to assist students with medical procedures (tube feeding, diabetic seizures) that could result in exposure to bodily fluids. Responds to emergencies (e.g. injured student, fights, etc.) for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns. Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively as a part of an instructional team. Ability to work effectively in an environment that can be both physically and emotionally fatiguing.

Attends meetings and in-service presentations as requested or required. Required training could include;
Oregon Intervention System, medical procedures, health and safety training, First Aid, and CPR. Confers with teachers (special education and/or mainstream teacher) on a regular basis for the purpose of assisting in evaluating special education student progress and/or implementing IEP objectives. Instruction of special education students (e.g. math groups, science experiments, reading, behavioral skills, daily living skills, writing, verbal skills, etc.)

for the purpose of implementing goals for supporting student growth and development and ensuring students success. Monitors special education students (e.g. classroom, field trips, lunch, playground, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment. Ability to work with students who may exhibit aggressive behavior, (kicking, hitting, spitting, scratching, language and biting) and implement behavior plans designed by IEP teams.

Provides support for daily hygiene skills (e.g., toileting assistance, tooth brushing, handwashing, and changing clothes). Performs regular cleaning and sanitizing of classroom equipment, sensory materials, and work spaces to maintain a safe, inclusive environment. Administers medication as required by building needs (training provided). Provides transportation support for students (Type 20 Certification). Ability to carry through with classroom and/or building procedures for discipline and positive supports.

Supervise students at work experience or in the community without direct teacher supervision. Acts as a mandated abuse reporter. Knowledge of Astoria School District Policies and building procedures. Regular and acceptable attendance is required. Performs other duties as assigned.
