Instructional Assistant

Under direct supervision of a licensed teacher, performs a variety of tasks assisting the teacher in the development of an instructional program by working with students individually or in small/large groups; preparing instructional materials, facilitating positive classroom engagement and conducting planned activities using teacher-designated methods and materials: some positions require aptitude and skills in working with particular disabilities or learning needs.

Qualifications of Position:
High School Diploma or equivalent knowledge, experience or training as required by OAR , Oregon Department of Education. Must be 18 years of age. May be required to obtain a First Aid and/or CPR card (training provided). Experience working with youth or in community settings is valued; prior experience is not required. Must be able to pass a fingerprint/background check.

Ability to maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students and staff. Ability to work professionally with others and to communicate effectively (both orally and in writing) with students and staff. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to supervise individual/groups of students in an instructional setting without constant teacher oversight; work in a team situation.

Ability to support students in dynamic environments that may be physically and emotionally demanding; accommodations available for physical requirements. Ability to work with students who may exhibit aggressive behavior, as required of specific job assignment. Possess knowledge of English usage, mathematics, and a basic understanding of the subjects in which this position is to provide assistance. Perform physical requirements, which may include:
Moderate degree of physical stamina Frequent standing, walking, and bending Occasional lifting up to 50 lbs. Engaging in de-escalation strategies and/or physical intervention if necessary (Training/OIS Certification provided), per building need. Basic digital literacy, including familiarity with common office software, or willingness to learn Possible exposure to bodily fluids in assisting students with using restrooms and tending to illness or injury (Bloodborne Pathogen training provided)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Review and support the student's IEP. Provide input on possible accommodations. Assist teachers in the planning and implementation of learning experiences of students enrolled in programs; confer with teachers to provide feedback on student performance, progress, and testing activities. Assist teachers in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on an empathetic and culturally responsive understanding of individual students, their needs, interests and abilities.

Assist in instruction of students in a group or one-on-one settings, often without direct teacher supervision; temporary modification of lesson plans or teaching strategies during instructional activity as necessary to achieve IEP goals and objectives as directed by a teacher. Support positive learning environments in accordance with District restorative practice procedures, which may include physical movement, lifting and carrying of students, per building needs.

Supervise students inside and outside of the classroom with an understanding of and provision for a safe environment. Perform various clerical functions in student record keeping, monitoring assignments, IEP development, maintaining accurate files and other related functions. Work in a variety of settings as needed to accommodate changing individual needs. This could include working with students in community settings. Assist with the supervision and safety of students during emergency drills, assemblies, and unstructured periods.

Check notebooks, correct papers, supervise testing and make-up work as assigned by the teacher. Inform and help a substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher. Participate in in-service/programs and meetings as assigned. Acts as a Mandated Reporter of child abuse. Knowledge of Astoria School District Policies and building procedures. Regular and acceptable attendance is required. Performs other duties as assigned.
