Professional Engineer 1 – Assistant Resident Engineer

Join our team as an assistant resident engineer. This position works with a crew of up to 14 and helps administer construction contracts and assist with design projects. Under direction, you will coordinate daily with contractors, backing inspectors, and prepare and review project documentation. You will serve as the main point of contact for inspectors, contractors, engineers, technical staff, local agencies and the public, while helping manage multiple construction contracts.
Area 1 of region 2 within the Oregon Department of Transportation spans from the Columbia River estuary to Neskowin along U.S. 101 and east to Scappoose, delivering projects that improve safety, access and environmental outcomes.
- Lead contract administration activities to ensure projects meet contract requirements, policies and procedures.
- Coordinate with contractors, inspectors and technical staff to review submittals, schedules and requests for information.
- Prepare and review project records, progress estimates, change orders and documentation to support accurate and timely contractor payments.
- Monitor quality and quantity documentation and recommend acceptance or rejection of work based on contract standards.
- Serve as a primary point of contact for contractors, local agencies and the public, and lead regular project meetings.
- Support project development by reviewing plans and specifications, coordinating team input and assisting during the bidding process.
- Provide project management and crew support by coordinating inspections, adjusting resources and mentoring team members.
- Assist the resident engineer by filling in as needed, supporting staff development and maintaining a safe, professional work environment.
- Work is usually performed in a typical office environment with about 30% field work. On-call duties, travel to remote construction sites, and exposure to heavy traffic and weather conditions are required.
Possession of a Civil Engineering license in the State of Oregon or the ability to obtain license within six months of hire. If registered in another state, a temporary permit to practice engineering must be obtained within six months from date of hire (per ORS 672.109).
What We’d Like To See- Knowledge of civil engineering principles, construction methods and practices, and construction contract administration related to transportation/highway projects.

- Base salary range: 7,049 - 10,936 per month (non-PERS). If you are already a participating PERS member or become PERS eligible, the salary range may increase by 6%.
