Patient Care Associate – NYC Jail Health Services

Location:

Astoria, NY (City of New York Health + Hospitals system). Salary: $25.38–$25.38 hourly. Shift: 12am–8am, 5days a week with alternating weekends. Regular full‑time; union position (1199).

Under the direction of a licensed nurse, the Patient Care Associate (PCA) provides direct patient care in a correctional health setting. Duties include medical, nursing, and clerical tasks while ensuring patient safety and comfort.

• Administer total care (bed bath, hygiene, and skin care).
• Assist with transfers, positioning, and range‑of‑motion exercises.
• Support ambulation and ADLs, including feeding and meal preparation.
• Document vital signs, intake‑output, and EKG results in the electronic medical record.
• Perform dry sterile dressing changes and other treatments.
• Maintain hot/cold applications and monitor patient status.
• Notify MD/nurse staff of any status changes.
• Perform urine testing, dipstick tests, and venipuncture.
• Chaperone staff in all clinical areas when requested.
• Assist with nursing follow‑ups, laboratory transfers, and quality controls.
• Perform job functions efficiently and safely.
• Document all encounters and complete encounter forms every shift.

• Conduct HIV pre‑ and post‑test counseling.
• Perform rapid HIV tests and enter data into records.
• Fax HIV testing information to the Nursing Office each tour.
• Perform EKGs and fax results.
• Assist with new admission processing.
• Maintain clinical equipment and supplies.

• Clean and calibrate equipment (thermometers, BP machines, EKG, suction).
• Stock and replenish clinic supplies.
• Maintain cleanliness and security of treatment and exam rooms.

• Cooperate with supervisors, peers, patients, visitors, and correctional staff.
• Maintain a friendly, professional atmosphere and appearance.
• Accept constructive criticism and use communication channels effectively.
• Respect individuals and seek assistance when needed.

Work includes days, nights, weekends, and holidays. PCAs stand for long periods and may face chemical and infectious hazards. Patients may be confused, agitated, or uncooperative.

• Lift up to 100lb.
• Stand for extended periods.
• Fine motor and visual acuity required.

5days a week with alternating weekends, 12am–8am.

• High school diploma or GED required.
• ECG, BCLS, and phlebotomy certificates.
• Computer competency.
• HIV counseling training/certification preferred.
• PCA, PCT, or CNA certification.
• Infection control certification.
