Duties

The Pacific West Region is recruiting for TEMPORARY seasonal positions not to exceed 1039 hours of work in a service year. Dates of employment will vary between park sites depending on funding, weather conditions and visitation. Within regulatory limitations, the length of initial appointment may be shortened or extended depending on work availability and funding.

The duty stations for the parks are:

The duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Utilize a variety of materials, tools, and equipment associated with the repair and maintenance of structures and grounds.
  • Perform minor plumbing repairs of limited difficulty such as tightening or replacing in‑kind fittings and fixtures.
  • Perform minor carpentry repairs of limited difficulty to buildings and quarters. Construct, install, repair, and replace such items as doors, shelves, supply racks, hardware, frame structures, windows, trim and cabinets.
  • Perform routine maintenance at different sites and visitor facilities, to include cleaning restrooms, and making minor repairs as needed.
  • Receive, unload, and process incoming shipments according to established procedures, and report discrepancies and damage to others responsible for such items.
  • May perform other duties such as painting equipment, masonry work, roofing, welding or assisting higher grade worker with maintenance of utility systems in the facility.
  • Operate a light truck to pick up supplies and to transport materials to and from work sites.
Physical Demands

Works from ladders, scaffolds and platforms and where surfaces to be coated, or the parts of systems worked on are hard to reach that require incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions

Work is performed inside and outside where dirt, spray, and fumes are present. Also required to work in inclement weather and/or wear protective equipment and clothing that are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable.

Requirements
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • May be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying possession of a valid State‑issued driver’s license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle.

    You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State‑issued driver’s license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver’s licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.

  • Will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • May be required to work on‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old or at least 16 years old and:
    • (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or
    • (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or
    • (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or
    • (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part‑time during the school…
