Overview

The primary purpose of the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is to perform assigned duties in a manner that promotes quality health care, positive customer service, and a environment committed to serving the Veteran. The LPN is assigned to the VAPORHCS Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT). This is an Open & Continuous announcement. Applicants will be referred to the hiring manager every 2 weeks from the open date of the announcement.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements
  • United States Citizenship:
    Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
  • English Language Proficiency:
    Licensed practical or vocational nurses appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in both spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) - and 7407(d)
  • Education:

    Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and/or accredited by NLNAC at the time the program was completed by the applicant
  • Verification can be obtained from the State approving agency or the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC)
  • Additional information may also be obtained from the ACEN Website (formerly the NLNAC)
  • Exceptions include: (1) Health care education in the military service or training in the military service which is accepted by the licensing body in the jurisdiction in which the individual is licensed as qualifying for full LPN/LVN licensure will be accepted as meeting the education requirements for VHA employment
  • OR (2) VHA employees who were converted to appointments under 38 U.S.C. 7401(3) or 7405 as part of Public Law 98-160 and Public Law 99-576
  • The waiver will not apply to persons appointed under 38 U.S.C. 7401(3) or 7405 after these conversions
  • OR (3) Individuals granted a license by a jurisdiction that does not require graduation from an approved school
  • Licensure:
    Full, active, current and unrestricted licensure as a LPN/LVN in the United States (state, territory, or commonwealth) or District of Columbia
  • Grade Determinations: criteria for GS-03 to GS-06, including required experience and responsibilities
  • GS-03:
    None beyond the basic requirements
  • GS-04:
    Six months of qualifying experience as LPN/LVN or equivalent
  • GS-05:
    Completion of at least one year of qualifying experience at the GS-4 level or equivalent
  • GS-06:
    Completion of at least one year of qualifying experience at the GS-5 level or equivalent and fully meeting all performance requirements
Responsibilities / Duties
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to provide a full range of practical nursing care to patients with a variety of physical and/or behavioral problems
  • Provides effective education to patients and/or family members regarding common disease processes, medications, and prescribed treatment regimes
  • Serve as a responsible member of the nursing team and interact appropriately with patients, family members, professionals, and other staff while incorporating customer service standards
  • Prepare, administer, and document actions taken for commonly prescribed oral, topical, subcutaneous, intramuscular, and/or intravenous medications as permitted by local policies
  • Document patient responses to medications and report any changes in condition to the RN or MD/DO
  • Recognize and respond to safety hazards, equipment issues, and supply deficiencies; report to appropriate personnel
  • Observe, identify, and respond to patient needs for care, including medication, equipment-assisted care, and patient/family education
  • Prepare and administer medications and treatments according to policies; monitor patient condition and report deviations
  • Recognize urgent or emergent care situations and seek assistance as directed
  • Assist in emergency interventions as directed and participate in resuscitation as needed
  • Establish constructive relationships with patients and families to promote positive communication and social interaction
  • Assist in diagnostic tests and procedures, including patient preparation and handling of specialized equipment
  • Participate in ongoing nursing education and share knowledge with staff
  • Act as a preceptor in orienting and training less experienced LPNs/LVNs or NAs/HTs
