Job Summary
Provides unit-based leadership working collaboratively with the Nurse Manager, Director, Physicians, and staff. Supervises and directs the activities of nursing and ancillary personnel using professional and supervisory discretion and independent judgment. Ensures that all patients on the unit receive cost-effective, professional care that results in positive outcomes and high patient satisfaction while maintaining the highest level of patient safety. Assesses and takes steps to improve the quality of patient experience.
Educationand Work Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in nursing or an equivalent combination of education and experience (Required)
- Master's Degree (Preferred)
- Five years of technical experience (Preferred)
- Supervisory experience or demonstrated supervisory skills (Required)
- Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the state of practice (Required)
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) or Basic Life Support (BLS OR HS-BLS OR RQIBLS) certification (Preferred)
- Clinical specialty and/or nursing administration certification (Preferred)
- Basic Life Support (BLS OR HS-BLS OR RQIBLS) certification (Required)
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) (Required)
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) (Required)
- Fetal Heart Monitoring (FHM) (Required)
Provides unit-based leadership in the development and provision of clinical services. Supervises and directs unit personnel. Initiates and coordinates individual and team conferences with health team members, patients, and/or families to revise care plans for optimal patient care.
Fosters an environment of patient and family centered care with special attention to cultural diversity and personal needs. Conducts rounds to review patient needs and introduces self to patients and families. Solicits feedback on nursing services and other concerns, and develops interventions or systems to address patient care across the continuum.
Develops strategies with the Nurse Manager/Director to improve customer satisfaction for patients, families, and physicians. Investigates and resolves patient care and operational issues. Recommends policy or procedure changes in collaboration with leadership.
Ensures compliance with Patient Safety Goals, hospital policy, Quality Measures, and Patient Safety initiatives through unit management and participation in performance improvement teams.
Works closely with clinical team members to implement systems, programs, and staff development activities that facilitate patient, family, and physician needs. Provides ongoing assessment of department operations and patient care processes for improvement opportunities.
Assesses staffing requirements continuously, manages personnel based on patient acuity and available skills, assigns staff to patients and activities, and arranges for relief during meals and breaks. Reviews schedule adjustments and participates in performance evaluation. Coaches and disciplines staff, and is involved in hiring and termination decisions.
Works with facility services to maintain department and equipment safety and operation. Facilitates repair of any malfunctioning equipment and ensures cleanliness of the department. Communicates incidents and special needs to the Director in a timely manner, while keeping staffing costs within budget.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
