**** Position Summary
** This position meets all the requirements set forth by the Kansas Board of EMS for the position of Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). Under the general supervision of the paramedic/shift supervisor, the EMT is expected to meet the urgent health care needs of all patients regardless of age or co-morbidity, consistent with their defined scope of practice. The EMT performs basic life support skills under the direction of the paramedic.
The EMT must be able to exercise considerable judgment, problem-solving and decision-making skills. The EMT provides out-of-hospital medical care to those with urgent needs and is a component of the overall healthcare system. The EMT delivers care as part of a system intended to decrease the morbidity associated with sudden illness and injury. Work is performed with a substantial degree of independence within the framework of prescribed policies and procedures and under the general supervision of the paramedic/shift supervisor and the Chief of Emergency Services.
** Essential Functions
*** Performs all the authorized activities of an EMT as described in K.S.A. 65-6121 and amendments thereto;
* Responds to 911 calls and provides basic emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergency patients in a timely, professional and compassionate manner;
* Operates ambulance using the most expeditious route while observing traffic ordinances and regulations;
* Assists in removing patient from ambulance and into emergency facility;
* Maintains all emergency vehicles and equipment in a state of readiness at all times, ensures the cleanliness and readiness of vehicles, equipment and facilities;
* Attends departmental training sessions;
* Maintains appropriate records and reports;
* Provides mutual aid service to other county departments as well as other jurisdictions;
* Operates radio and other communication equipment;
* Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of the facilities and equipment; cleans the offices, classrooms, bathroom, emergency vehicles and equipment, ambulance bays and storage areas as needed; utilizes proper decontaminating procedures as indicated; cares for grounds around station; make minor repairs, washes, hangs and dries clothing and items;
* Operates office machines, such as photocopiers and scanners, facsimile machines, voice mail systems, and personal computers.
** Secondary Functions
*** EMTs may be assigned special duties;
* Attends meetings and trainings, as required;
* Performs other related duties as deemed necessary or as required.## Qualifications
** Knowledge
* ** Knowledge awareness of applicable emergency medical services techniques, policies, procedures, codes and laws; stays abreast of HCFA/Medicare/Medicaid changes and requirements;
* Knowledge of applicable federal, state, county and municipal laws, rules, regulations, codes and/or statutes, processes and procedures, e.g., HIPAA, COBRA and ADA;
* Knowledge of applicable departmental policies, procedures and regulations;
* Knowledge of principles and procedures for providing internal and external customer service; this includes assessing the needs of both to meet quality standards for services and to provide high levels of customer satisfaction;
* Knowledge of office record keeping methods, practices and techniques;
* Knowledge of chemicals and hazardous materials;
* Knowledge of use and operation of emergency equipment;
* Knowledge of medications.
** Skills
* ** Prioritizing work assignments and projects as well as establishing standards to use and implement;
* Good oral and written communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
** Abilities
* ** Ability to serve as role model to staff in areas such as loyalty, integrity, appearance and work habits;
* Ability to gain proficient knowledge of the geography of the city and county;
