Position: Road & Bridge- Operator I
Position Summary Under the supervision of the Superintendent and Foremen’s, the Shop Mechanic/Equipment Operator I performs maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment. The employee in this position is required to operate department equipment, power and hand tools, operate trucks and perform manual labor for road and bridge maintenance, hauling and spreading rock, snow removal and related duties. Utilizes accepted standards of safety in all phases of designed duties.

Follows objectives and policies that are predetermined by the County of Atchison.

Essential Functions This is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and duties performed by an Equipment Operator I. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

Responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of all County owned equipment and machinery;

Responsible for repairs and preventive maintenance;

Maintains equipment records;

Reports all safety defects on equipment and vehicles;

Makes recommendations on needed repairs based on examination of equipment;

Operates department equipment and motor vehicles;

Contacts vendors on price quotes for parts, tools and other supplies;

Ability to travel out of town to pick up parts;

Answers the telephone and directs calls or messages to the appropriate person;

Exhibits positive attitude towards position, co-workers, supervisory personnel and members of the general public.

Secondary Functions Operates and transports County vehicles and equipment;

Haul and spread rock, salt and sand, when needed;

Performs snow removal operations, when needed;

Performs bridge repairs, when needed;

Performs mowing and brush removal on roadsides, when needed;

Patching and sealing of roads, when needed;

Attends meetings and trainings, as required;

Performs any other related duties as deemed necessary or as required by foreman’s or superintendent.

Knowledge Thorough knowledge of auto mechanics, equipment maintenance and repairs;

Knowledge of welding and steel fabrication;

Knowledge of applicable federal, state, county and municipal laws, rules, regulations, codes and/or statutes, processes and procedures;

General knowledge of operation, maintenance and safety precautions of equipment used;

General knowledge of road and bridge maintenance and construction;

Knowledge of applicable departmental policies, procedures and regulations;

Knowledge of chemicals and hazardous materials;

Thorough knowledge of safety standards;

Knowledge of construction standards and related information that applies to projects.

Skills Prioritizing work assignments and projects as well as establishing standards to use and implement;

Good oral and written communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills;

Good mathematics and organizational skills;

Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well after six months in the position.

Abilities Ability to operate truck and various department equipment, machinery and motor vehicles;

Ability to read and comprehend county, state and federal regulations;

Ability to read and comprehend technical/mechanical manuals;

Ability to read and understand diagrams and repair manuals;

Ability to follow written and/or verbal directions;

Ability to troubleshoot problems and develop the most appropriate solutions;

Ability to analyze safety situations;

Ability to access situations and make recommendations;

Ability to gain knowledge of the geography of the city and county;

Ability to maintain effective working relations with peers, public officials and the general public;

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with county employees within administration, staff members and from other departments;

Ability to handle citizen concerns and complaints effectively;

Ability to speak clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations;

Available to be on call as needed;

Ability to work evenings, weekends and/or holidays;

Ability to meet physical demands worksheet requirements.

Required

Education and/or Experience High school education or G.E.D;

One year of mechanic/shop experience is required.
