Safety Specialist

The Safety Specialist plays a key role in developing, implementing, and enforcing safety programs and protocols within a high-volume production environment. This position advises production teams on safety procedures to protect team members and ensure full compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, including OSHA, EPA, and ADEM. The role focuses heavily on second shift operations, requiring a visible, confident presence on the plant floor to address safety issues in real time, support supervisors with safety reporting, and foster a culture where safe work practices are consistently followed.

Responsibilities:

  • Participate in the development and implementation of comprehensive safety programs, procedures, and protocols for the facility.
  • Advise production teams on safety standards and best practices to protect team members and maintain regulatory compliance with OSHA, EPA, ADEM, and other applicable agencies.
  • Perform hazard analyses on processes and work areas and recommend effective mitigation procedures to plant operations.
  • Participate in the development, tracking, and reporting of department safety work, including incident data and corrective actions.
  • Conduct routine and follow-up environmental, health, safety, and hazard inspections across the facility to identify and correct unsafe conditions.
  • Respond promptly to emergency situations involving hazardous materials, fire or smoke incidents, or unknown hazards, and prepare detailed reports with recommendations.
  • Analyze accident and incident reports to identify trends and recurring issues, and recommend corrective measures to eliminate unsafe conditions and behaviors.
  • Support production supervisors by preparing and submitting safety-related reports, ensuring accuracy and timely completion.
  • Enforce safety standards on second shift, including addressing non-compliance directly and confidently when team members do not follow required procedures.
  • Monitor rotation of assemblers between stations to ensure compliance with safety-related rotation requirements and reduce ergonomic risks from repetitive tasks.
  • Identify safety issues on the floor as they arise, speak up proactively, and drive corrective actions to resolution.
  • Promote proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including ensuring team members wear required gear when entering and working on the plant floor.
  • Assist team members with PPE needs, including guidance on purchasing, using, and maintaining equipment appropriately.
  • Support and participate in annual safety training, refresher courses, safety talks, and equipment-specific training such as tugger and forklift safety.
  • Engage regularly with team members on the floor, build rapport, ask questions, and maintain a visible presence to reinforce safety expectations.
  • Respond to ergonomic concerns, such as aches or pains related to work tasks, and collaborate with first aid and safety resources to address issues.
  • Participate in AED and CPR first response activities as needed and support first responders during incidents.

    • Skill in performing safety inspections and ensuring compliance with OSHA safety standards and NFPA safety standards.
    • Ability to develop, implement, and enforce safety programs, procedures, and protocols in a production or industrial environment.
    • Strong ability to communicate technical safety information clearly to non-technical personnel at all levels of the organization.
    • Ability to gather safety and incident data, compile information, and prepare accurate, timely reports.
    • Knowledge of federal, state, and local safety regulations, protocols, and procedures, including OSHA, EPA, and ADEM requirements.
    • Ability to investigate and analyze safety-related information, identify root causes, and draw sound conclusions.
    • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations involving hazardous materials, fire, smoke, or unknown hazards.
    • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations and build cooperative relationships with production team members.
    • Demonstrated confidence in addressing safety non-compliance and giving clear direction when safety standards are not being followed.
    • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety and Health or a related discipline.
    • 0–2 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities of a safety-focused role.
    • Ability to work night shift, Monday–Friday from 7:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m., with an hour lunch and occasional Saturday night shifts with production.

    • Experience with safety tracking and reporting systems, including compiling metrics and follow-up actions.
