Responsibilities
  • Perform routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and assisting the public during emergency situations.
  • Assist in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; perform basic welding as needed; use and move equipment, tools, materials and products related to these activities.
  • Assist with traffic control; place and gather cones, warning signs and barricades; flag traffic.
  • Maintain highways and rights‑of‑way; perform roadway repairs; erect and repair guard rails, highway markers and signs; haul materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Move/pick up litter and roadway debris.
  • Operate light equipment such as a front‑end loader (one‑and‑quarter cubic yard or less), pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
  • Perform preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment; complete required reports including timekeeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms and PMI.
  • Sand or clean bridges and roads; post warning signs; help the public and perform other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents and hazardous material spills.
  • Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
Additional Duties for General Transportation Tech II
  • Assist in inspecting traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices; safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Maintain highways and rights‑of‑way; perform skilled roadway repairs; erect and repair guard rails, highway markers and signs; haul materials and equipment to job sites.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: None required for Tech I;
    High school diploma or equivalent for Tech II.
  • Experience: Tech I:
    No experience required. Tech II: 1 year experience in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation or related work. Experience may be satisfied by full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent. Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may substitute for experience on a year‑per‑year basis.
  • Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license at the time of application. Must have a Commercial Class “A” Driver’s License with an “N” Endorsement or obtain a CDL “A” License within 120 calendar days from date of employment.
