Accounting Support Specialist
Position in the Student Financial Aid office supporting the organization’s accounting functions, maintaining accurate daily transaction records, accounts receivable/payable, inventory, payroll, and other financial records. Classified AFSCME 3200, 12‑month appointment, full time, 40 hours per week, Monday–Friday 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., with occasional evening or weekend overtime.
Key Responsibilities- Guide and assist customers with complex financial inquiries related to billing, financial aid, tuition rates, tax forms, refunds, and student receivables.
- Advise lower‑level employees on complex customer inquiries, providing advanced policy knowledge.
- Direct work, train, and supervise student employees as needed.
- Process requisitions in a timely manner, ensuring proper documentation and recording.
- Provide complex financial support to departments and university areas.
- Ensure financial aid applications are received, processed correctly, and resolve issues.
- Process financial aid award adjustments and determine loan eligibility and award amounts.
- Communicate with students regarding loan issues, eligibility, and award amounts.
- Post and remove charges on accounts, place holds for delinquent loans/payments, and prepare invoices and account documentation.
- Compile, analyze, and reconcile accounts related to loan and grant programs to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Record and track expenses and revenue for department or area.
- Review work of other employees.
- Knowledge of standard finance and business policies, procedures, services, tools, and equipment typical of a high‑school degree or GED or equivalent.
- Minimum 3 years of related experience; an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience is acceptable.
- At least one year of customer service experience.
- Associate’s degree or vocational/technical school degree.
- Service‑oriented, diplomatic, and tactful with problem resolution.
- Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to delve into problematic issues and seek resolution at student, parent, or institution level.
Compensation includes an hourly salary range of $14.65 to $18.68, dependent on education and experience, and a comprehensive benefits package: medical, vision, dental, basic and supplemental life, paid holidays, vacation, sick leave, retirement, tuition waiver up to 100 % for self and eligible dependents, parental leave, adoption reimbursement, transgender care, flex‑time, and professional development programs.
