Purpose & Job Related Requirements

The purpose of this job is to process and deliver all incoming and outgoing mail for the Athens-Clarke County Unified Government. Duties and responsibilities include collecting and recording department daily mail usage, preparing monthly reports for indirect budget deductions, distributing interdepartmental mail, and performing additional tasks as assigned.

Work Schedule

Monday - Friday 8 am — 5 pm. May be required to work on religious holidays. Regular and predictable attendance is required. Must work cooperatively with others.

Minimum Training & Experience Required

High school diploma or equivalent with six months previous mail courier experience preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position. Must possess a valid driver's license.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Distribute all incoming U.S. and interdepartmental mail.
  • Meter all outgoing mail and select the best rates.
  • Monitor the U.S. Postal bulk mail area for required postage level.
  • Pick up mail from the post office for daily distribution.
  • Coordinate department bulk shipments.
  • Order all supplies associated with the mail room.
  • Deliver and pick up all mail for departments/divisions located outside of the Courthouse, including in all types of inclement weather.
  • Assist the Records Retention Technician as directed by the division administrator.
  • Answer telephone calls to provide information on mail matters.
  • Schedule corrective and preventive maintenance for the mail delivery vehicle.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of policies, procedures, and activities of the Internal Support Division of the Central Service Department as they pertain to the position of Mail Courier.
  • Knowledge of departmental terminology.
  • Knowledge of mail metering procedures and methods.
  • Skill to drive a mail courier van.
  • Ability to compile, organize, prepare and maintain records and reports effectively and according to regulations.
  • Effective communication with supervisors and staff.
  • Use of independent judgment in routine and non‑routine situations.
  • Mathematical calculation ability.
  • Planning, organizing, and prioritizing daily assignments.
  • Comprehension and application of regulations and procedures.
Physical Requirements

Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including a mail courier van, calculator, and mail meter. Required movements: walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, etc. Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds occasionally or 20 pounds frequently. Physical demand is medium work.
