Position Summary
This is an entry‑level position whose main emphasis is to support and assist skilled tradesmen in day‑to‑day construction activities. The work is supervised by a foreman and, to a lesser degree, by the skilled workers being assisted. Responsibilities include helping to form and place concrete, potholing utilities, serving as a spotter during excavation, assisting in backfill, grading, asphalt placement and other job‑site activities.
The role also involves maintaining barricades, signage, and performing traffic control, using hand tools and small machinery such as cutoff saws, jackhammers, tamps and drills. Additional duties include reporting during inclement weather for downed tree removal, snow and ice removal, and any other tasks as needed.
- Knowledge of basic construction practices/techniques including, but not limited to, concrete forming/placement, grading, and jobsite safety.
- Ability to perform manual labor as needed in support of construction activities.
- Ability to operate small machinery including, but not limited to, cutoff saws, jack hammers, tamps, etc., as well as hand tools.
- Stand, walk, stoop, bend, squat, and lift up to 75 lbs. throughout an 8‑hour work day.
- Perform duties under adverse weather and adverse climate conditions.
- Assist concrete masons – forming and placement of concrete for sidewalks, curb cuts, curbing, footers, aprons (25% of time).
- Assist construction operators with earthmoving activities related to utilities, including spotting, rough/fine grading, excavation/back filling, tamping (25% of time).
- Assist concrete masons and construction operators to establish earthwork gradients for asphalt and concrete placement (25% of time).
- Operate construction equipment including compressors, jackhammers, compactors, saws, etc., as well as hand tools (10% of time).
- Perform traffic control measures for road and utility construction and maintenance projects, including barricades, cones, and signage (10% of time).
- Respond to grounds emergencies as they arise to maintain safety of the campus community, including periods of inclement weather (5% of time).
- High school diploma or equivalent.
