Assistant Professor Spanish Applied Linguistics Position Summary

The Department of Romance Languages at the University of Georgia invites applications for a tenure‑track Assistant Professor position in Spanish Applied Linguistics. The successful candidate will begin fall 2026 and will be expected to teach a 2/2 course load in Spanish Second Language Acquisition (SLA) and/or Bilingualism, including a graduate‑level course on SLA research taught in Spanish, as well as introductory courses in Hispanic linguistics at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Responsibilities also include maintaining an active research program, contributing to departmental service, and mentoring student research in the MA and PhD programs in Hispanic and Romance Linguistics.

Responsibilities
  • Teach a 2/2 course load in Spanish SLA and/or Bilingualism, including a graduate‑level SLA research course taught in Spanish.
  • Teach introductory courses in Hispanic linguistics at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Maintain an active research program in Spanish SLA/Bilingualism.
  • Serve in departmental roles and duties.
  • Mentor student research in the MA and PhD programs.
Qualifications
  • PhD in Spanish, Romance Languages, Second Language Acquisition/Bilingualism, Applied Linguistics, or a closely related field (ABD acceptable if degree is in hand at appointment).
  • Native or near‑native proficiency in Spanish and English.
  • At least one year of teaching experience at the university level, including teaching or graduate‑assistantship in Spanish linguistics.
  • Proficiency in an additional language spoken in the Americas, Europe, or Africa (including indigenous or heritage languages).
  • Active research agenda in Spanish SLA/Bilingualism with evidence of scholarly productivity and potential for external funding.
  • Evidence of effective teaching and Mentoring of undergraduate and/or graduate students, including supervision of student research.
  • Interest in developing or teaching a research methods course (quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods).

  • Language pedagogy and assessment.
  • Language acquisition and cognition.
  • Sociolinguistics and language in society.
